I did the Home Depot plugs and it came out great. They are in the specialty fastener section and they are called "push lock".

I used a drill and very carefully and deliberately drilled the centers out. Behind my plate were a couple of scratches, but it does look alot better now. I have yet to pick up some plugs, but since I'm heading to Home Depot very soon, I'll dig around for the plugs.

What did you have to drill out?
To remove my plate holder I first removed the plate (2 screws) and then saw that the plate holder was mounted to the bumper by four more screws. Removed those screws and all was off. Then painted and inserted the Home Depot plugs. Done...
I'm in transit now but will be home Friday afternoon. I still have an extra plug in the plastic bag showing the part number. I'll snap a pic and post it.

I used a small bit cos mine were riveted in as well. Just get a bit slightly larger than the diameter of the rivet center/post/whatever you call it, and then drill slowly and carefully. Once you get two off, you'll then realize it's a cinch and go to town.
Honestly, I was terrified, but a friend of mine was helping me roll my fenders and he was like, "Uh, take that **** off." Trying to not be a *****, I was like, "Yeah, got a drill?" We fumbled for a minute trying to see if there was anything to screw up, but in the end, I like the results, but am very displeased that the paint was scratched where the plate rubbed. You can't really see it, but I know it's there.
