Default '89 Iroc-Z 6.0L/T56 Build Thread *56k warning*

*Copied from another forum*
Hey Everyone,

Wellllll.

Ive started work again on my iroc-z, and the fact that i have car ADD, and cant seem to ever leave my car alone, i decided my iroc needs a solid foundation to support future mods, for when i can afford a turbo, or a bottle, or something along those lines.

Anyways. So the progression on this car has been:
'Aug '06 - My 16th birthday present
'June '07 - Cammed 305, road worthy, new paint!
'Sept '07 - 17th birthday, more milestones must be completed
'Oct '07 - 305 dyno's 202rwhp/287rwtq. Gross.
'Feb '08 - Car is on display @ Speedorama in toronto
'Aug '08 - 5.3L Is running in my camaro (Plus a **** ton of other mods)
'Dec '08 - 5.3L is torn out

Soooo. Thats me and my car's relation ship slammed into a few characters.

And now we wonder...5.3 byebye? wtf...what now?

Well. 6.0L. Yep, simply put.

Enough of my rambling.

This year's portion of the iroc will be a H/C/I 6.0L/T56, and doing a mucho amount of cleaning up on my swap, cause my last swap was a bit of a quick finished product. New swap will be ultra clean and quick to boot!

Basic changes:
Motor
Trans
Fuel Feed
Trans crossmember (Copying justins, sorry man, just looks so perdy haha)
Wiring harness reshaped (Truck harness was fugly)
LT1 Rad will be used w/ LS1 fans for extra iron block cooling
Headers - Redone in 1 3/4" tubing, or stainless works ones will take place.

Thats the basis.

Wiring harness re-done:

For the sake of anyone who doesnt know my car:

Old 5.3L

Yum, 6.0L:

Started to dress it in the stock heads/LS6 intake, then tore it down

I need a bigger shop. Parts overflowing means things gotta get stacked.

Very best oil wasnt previous owners top priority, but atleast theres no sludge

Figured id try my hand at porting my oilpump. Turned out okay, i went back and further smoothed the outlet. Shimmed .100"

Painted the engine bay, looks worse then it is, but to be honest it didnt turn out that great. Ill repaint the car in the few years, engine bay will be included. Till then, function over form.

Shifter hole cut

Thats it for now. Engine/trans will be mated this week, and it will all be mounted up next weekend. Gotta fabricate my new crossmember next weekend, then determine headers so i can fabricate a Y.

Before the motor goes in ill be putting in my new fuel lines & new brake lines

Thanks!

Diff is my wrong part in the mix, stocker is in place right now until i can scrape funds to put in a S60.

Ive been juggling the idea of a custom fabricating a 8.8 or a 8.5 10 bolt to work in it to save some cash, but ill have to further investigate whether a high nickel mig wire is enough to weld mild steel to cast.

Can't go wrong with a S60. More weight gaing thought.

8.8's are kind of in at this time. Still strong but not as heavy.
It all depends on your expected RWHP.

Right now im aiming for 450ish.

8.8 Would be an option due to the fact its cheap.

Ive got the fabrication skill and knowhow to fabricate the rear end, its just always a bit of a risk welding mild to cast. I can pick up an 8.8 for $150, i might just do so and work on developing a tq. arm system that has a failsafe setup so if a weld were to fail, theres a backup setup that can get you home to repair the welds.

Something like bolting into the webbing, or a collar kinda deal that wraps the housing and bolts on.

We all know if the tq. arm snaps off, its never goin to be pretty.
