I cant figure out why.........WHY they would use a seriel port instead of a USB. Oh well, at least theres no data logging like I need on my 97 SS. Ill just run a long cable out the window from my home computer, lol. Eric L

Just as a trivia bit I guess. How long HAVE they been making the MSD 6012 and 6010 boxes? What year did they start producing them? Eric L

Has nothing to do with our ignition controllers, it is the fact they used them on any other programmable boxes for any other applications, someone said "Hey, lets order a ton of these so we have plenty"

The more they buy, or parts to build, the cheaper.

I purchased mine at Radio Shack as well. Part #26-949(6ft USB to Serial Cable) plugs into my laptop to the MSD ECM. Manufactured by Gigaware. 39.99+ tax.

The first time that I remember seeing anything about them was in a dyno test in Hot Rod Magazine in Feb '05. That was the Edelbrock box, which I think was released first. They were probably available before that...like, maybe late 2004?

UPDATE: I got my MSD 6010 yesterday. Yep, it came with the data cable. Its funny because my Dell laptop still has the COM port so I can use this cable just fine. And my laptop isnt very old either. So, now all I need is 1 coil pack harness for the driver side. Anyone?

I got my 6010 second hand from someone else. Decided I wanted to mount it where I had my CD box from my old SBc ignition. The harness I have is easily 2-3 feet too long and I have to tripple it back against itself. Looks terrible. Did I get the extension harness or is this how long the stock one is? My plan is to just run the data cable through the firewall and coil and stow it in the glove box.

If this is the extended harness, does someone have the standard length one they want to trade me straight arcoss for?

You can see it, the jumble of wires below the 6LS box on the firewall.

Guys, here's a good all in one solution, a serial to USB adaptor cable, 6ft long. $15.

I'd drill a hole and put a grommet in there and put it inside the car up under the dash and away from the heat. Just my .02, and it would look cleaner under the hood as well.
