Default msd 6010 or msd 6012

Just want to know if there is any difference between the two boxes or is it just for application between the 24 and 58 reluctor rings? Does either one have different features or issues and can i run the 6012 on say a '03 6.0L engine if i replace the crank with a 58 tooth and the crank sensor,,,would i be ok? can i even do that???
Thanks
Tony

Just make sure the box matches the reluctor. 6010 is for early 24 and 6012 is for 58 tooth.

the 2 MSD boxes have the same features.
the 6012 is looking for the 58x crank reluctor, and also the newer cam sensor, as well as a 4x cam signal.

To run the 6012 on a '03 6.0, you need:
the 58x reluctor on crank
the 58x crank sensor( gray)
a 4x top cam gear
a 4x style cam sensor( I dont have the pt # handy)
a LS2 front cam cover w/ sensor provisions
You are better off keeping the 24x cam sensor and getting a msd 6010.

If you are stuck with a 58x crank in your genIII style engine, you can use a Lingenfelter 58x to 24x crank signal adapter w/ gray cranks sensor

Not to hijack a thread but:

If you have a LS2 that had the early 24x wheel, I would run the 6010 correct?

If it has the 24X wheel, does it also have the correct cam wheel / sensor for the 6010?

Or is it possible its a LS2 with a 24X crank and the newer 4x cam?

How do you identify 4x vs 1x? cam gears?

Thanks

all 24x cranks sensor engines come with 1x cam sensors.
to identify the cam gears, just count the rasied areas for the cam sensor.
theese are crappy links, but check 'em out
1x has 1 big raised area aprox half the cam gear

and the 4x has 4 raised areas, 2 big, and 2 smaller

Cool man thanks for the knowledge.

What about running the 58x to 24x box with the 6010? Pretty sure it wouldn't cause any weird complications?

If you have an aluminum block Gen lV LS2 with a 24X reluctor (not that uncommon) you will use the 6010 box as you stated and there is one other thing you MUST do. You will have to lengthen the cam sensor wires so they will reach the front mounted sensor and you will also have to switch the positions of the two outside wires (marked A and C ) in the MSD plug for the cam sensor. I have the engine you describe and when I tried to fire it I got backfiring and wouldn't start. After I figured it out and switched the wires it started instantly. Ron

I have a 2006 gto LS2 and if not for this site I'd have bought the wrong box. Thanks everyone for posting this info. You'd think that GM, Edelbrock, and MSD would put some sort of footnote in their descriptions of these boxes to cut down on returns and misapplication.

All you have to look for is the color of the crank and cam sensor plugs. They are keyed in such a way that you can't hook them up wrong.

I bought an LS2 back before MSD had even come out with the 6012 box. Had the wrong ignition for almost a year before I got around to trying to hook it up. Summit exchanged the box with no issues.
