Default MSD 6012 factory mis wired

Hey gang, just wanted to drop a line and warn everyone about the wiring malfunction on my NEW 6012. Another member ran into this, so I spotted it right off the bat. They swapped the MAP plug and the Cam Sensor plug. So essentially the MAP plug is on the Cam sensor wires and the Cam sensor plug is on the MAP wires. All thats needed is to pull apart the plugs and swap them. And the plugs are VERY similar, even the wire colors are, so it was an easy mistake for someone to make on the Assy. line. Hope nobody beats thier head against the wall for to long over this. Im planing on calling MSD to inform them of the problem so they can correct this. Hope this helps, Eric L

Thanks, I talked to MSD tech today and he said he would call production immediately. Hopefully they do, but its an easy mistake to catch. The plugs are REAL close with the exception of a notch in the cam sensor plug. Eric L

What gives it away that it is swapped if the wires are colored the same? I am installing mine on friday and will look at it tomorrow!

Should fit with or without the extension harness but the extension corrects the swapped wires. Think I have that on the shelf if you need it.

ok, my cam sensor plug on the 6012 harness will not plug directly into the cam sensor. the cam sensor has a slit in it and the plug does not....the crank sensor plug plugs in just fine.

Compare the cam sensor plug to the map sensor plug. Maybe thats why it wont plug in?

Yes, that is correct. The 58X reluctor motors have a different, slightly smaller cam sensor plug. They are wired differently too. You need to either use the extension harness or swap a cam sensor plug onto the end of the MSD harness. It is pretty easy to push out the pins and put on the plug from the end of the extension harness. You need to swap two wires if you swap out the plug.

I did the plug swap so I no longer need to route the harness the bottom of the motor and back up again.

My plug swap didn't work out right. Maybe I did it wrong? I swapped the plug and installed the wires as they were in the original cam plug(I think). Did I need to switch them around? I don't have the extension harness. I keep getting a Cam Sensor Failed message.

Did you ever get your question answered? You need to swap two of the wires. A quick search on extension harness should pull up a pic

Wasn't there supposed to be a 1k resistor across the two outer wires when running without the extension harness? Look on MSD's site...

Actors extension harness swaps the wires correct. Small gm harness that can factory that is maybe 6 inches long.

The problem must have been going on for a while now. I bought mine about a year ago and had the same thing happen, i think maybe they use the same harness for the 6010 and the 6012 or packaged them wrong, the long wire for the cam sensor cause on gen 4 engines the cam sensors on the timing cover and not the back of the block like a gen 3.
