Default My car's progress and weight

Havent been in this page forum for a while and I thought I'd let you all know what is going on. I did get the LQ9 bolted in with the S-10 swap mounts. I got the intake and MSD and the Pacesetter F body headers. I have a Holley 670 on the way now. BTW, how is a "Street Avenger" different?

I am going to use a 4L60 I already have so I got the crank spacer and am now trying to find longer bolts - they seem like a weird size larger than 10mm but smaller than 12mm. I might have to bite the bullet so to speak and go to the local Chevy dealer.

Speedtigger was talking about engine weight and I want to chime in. I removed the cast iron 231 v6 (remember iron intake and exhaust manifolds) and the junky 200 transmission. Now the aluminum headed LQ9 makes the front of the car sit HIGHER than before. I have SBC springs sitting in my garage, and I don't think I am going to use 'em. I'm not done putting her back together so there might be some more "settling" later, but this combo is not heavy IMHO.

Now that I have it tagged and insured I took it to a local scale - weighs 3120 which is less than what the title says.

The LS engines are lighter than I thought.

Default Bad news

I had an old 4L60 (700R4) in my garage so I installed it to save $$$.

WELL - the LQ9 is chewing this thing up!!! It slips a lot when I lay into it and third gear is going now. It pulls hard in first and second gear (for now).

A couple years ago I had a 12 second 5.0 Mustang and this seems to go as good.

Default You know it wouldn't clear the hood unless I got a tiny air filter

Amazingly, the Escalade alternator does not interfere!

Just for reference on the swap weight, On my chevelle, before : it had a iron block/heads SBC with an alum intake and puny headers and 2" dual exhaust. Post LS swap : Iron block/AL heads 6.0L , Carb manifold, 1-3/4 headers, dual 2-1/2 exhaust.
Gained 80 lbs. Same scale used. I was surprised. I guess the LS block is very beefy and the aluminum front cover and oil pan are not lighter than the old tin steel pieces.

The larger exhaust could be half your weight gain

I tried to weigh it before/after with the same 1/2 tank level. Agreed, a gallon either side of half could make a 15 pound difference. I'm sure the exhaust weighs a fair bit more than the 'ol rusted out system I had to saw off. My point was I was initially hoping for a 50lb weight loss from the AL heads....

Got a new issue of one of the car magazines which compares Mustangs, Camaros, and Chargers from 1969 to today's models. The muscle cars today weigh anywhere from 500 to 1000 pounds more than back then.

You guys know removing weight from a car is like giving it horsepower. I'll feel confident (when I finally get to the track) racing any of these new models - I'll have them beat by hundreds of pounds before the race even starts!

Zone 89 -I have a "fake" front bumper - made of fiberglass which saves 70 pounds.

Yep,
I have a good friend with a 2010 Challenger SRT 6.1 . It weighed 4175 lbs on the scale at the dragstrip. Without driver.

It's been a couple months and I have been to the track. I'm running high 12s - need to save up for some valve springs, maybe a cam. Have traction issues so need to look into some rear end work too.
