well i dont have an iphone so i dont know how they work but when you download MSD's program to your comp can you just hook up your iphone to the comp with some type of usb type of chord and transfer the program onto the iphone like you would use a zip drive. thann open the file through your iphone and it would be saved on there? than be able to use it like you would on a laptop? again i dont have an iphone and dont know how they work. but just throwing that out there.

What's the difference between the iPad and laptop, it's something extra you got to carry around.iPad are cool but I was thinking in a since were it's something you carry at all times.

how often are you "really" changing timing tables once you figure out max timing at the track based off mph, it's pretty much a set it and forget option. Now if you want to change the 2 step rpm or pill up the nitrous at the track I could see needing a laptop everytime you go, but I already fill a truck with tools and everything else needed, whats one more item

MSD needs to update their box to use Bluetooth instead of the archaic serial port. Then pretty much anything would be able to program it and read from it in real time. You would still need the MSD software to run on the connecting computer. Don’t know if they support apple products.
In the mean time you could use something like this. Might still need to run a 12V power wire to it.

Don’t know why that thing is $60. You can get a serial to USB and USB to Bluetooth adapters for $10 each. Nice thing about the adapter is it unplugs. Otherwise the guy staged next to you at the track could hack your ignition and slow you down.
I notice they are starting to make OBDII Bluetooth adapters that allow you to plot engine computer data in real time. Sure would make a digital dash an easy thing. Just a tablet PC and a single power wire.

I have an android phone and I use the "Torque" app with a PLX bluetooth obd2 adapter to monitor real time info, read and clear codes and GPS fuel mileage, etc. Works great, if they can do all of that, MSD should be able to figure it out. Android uses micro usb, so cable shouldn't be a problem.
