Default Air Cleaners - What is your set up?

Since I have been out of the game for a while, I starting reading threads on the best air cleaners these days. I read on a lot of forums including Yellow Bullet. What I found out was that nothing really seems to have changed. Some racers run air cleaners, some don't. Some swear by the K&Ns and other say they got no improvement over a paper filter. So, I will put it to you all. What do you run on your car? And, do you take it off at the track?

well currently an air filter won't fit on the monstrousity that is my engine under a 4" cowl

BUT I did run a slight drop base K&N 14x3 with the K&N filtered lid, pretty expensive but the best option IMO. The deeper drop base they offer for the base is too deep IMO to give enough clearance over the vent tubes on the quick fuel carb I run.

Most air cleaner comparisons I have read show where the K&N's really make a difference is when they start getting dirty. The flow through a regular paper filter drops pretty fast with exposure to dirt whereas the K&N's keep flowing near max. So if you don't mind replacing the paper filters on a regular basis then probably won't see a HP or speed improvement with a K&N.

I don't see any advantage to NOT running a K&N.

I run a 14x3 K&N with a solid top Moroso 1" drop base. I looked at the mesh top K&N's, but didn't go that way because with hood vents right above the air cleaner I worried about water infiltration. Moroso claims the shape of their tops is worth some HP. Don't know which top would perform better.

i run the mesh top on both of my camaros. a couple years ago, i put the 68 on a dyno to check my fuel/air. the dyno guy wanted to see if the top made a difference . on back to back pulls(after a cool down) the k&n made 3 more hp than NO filter at all. made a believer out of me. to run the 3 in. filter on the 72 with the vic jr and fast throttle body, i had to cut 3 sections out of the base and raise them to clear the fuel lines and linkage.i still only have about a half in.of hood clearance. i had some percys hyper fiber that i molded to clear then riveted and sealed the edges. a little redneck, but u cant see it and it works.

This is the only thing I can run without cutting the windshield. The filter is mashed on the backside but I haven't noticed any ill effects

I run a drop base w/ a 14x4 k&n and and a solid chrome top.
I leave it on at the track too because I don't want **** in the engine.
I have read that the GM L88 style curved base and at least a 3" element with a contoured top is the best for power, Moroso makes 1 like this, I will buy it next time I need an air cleaner assy.

Although not an LSX motor (yet ) I have a 14"D x 3"T drop base with a paper filter... I used to take it off at the track...then I forgot one time and made 3 passes when it hit me....I forgot to remove it , took it off and guess what..........NO difference in ET/MPH

So I leave it on now.

a well shaped base diffuses the air and creates less turbulance, so they say. run the filter. it keeps the crap out.

they sell offset base filters so you could run a larger one if you wanted to.

Biggest "drop" base I could find, K&N 14 x 3 element and a Moroso solid top. I have 1/4" clearance on my 2 1/2" tall Boss '9 hood scoop...

S10xGN, that moroso top you have is supposed to be the good 1, do you have a pic of the base from inside the air cleaner?

The middle two with the paper filter on my 89 w the 6.0 gained nothing from running no filter at all, wide band didnt read any different either and that is the cheapest filter i could find.

I have been hearing this a lot.

I did order the Wix 14 x 3 1/2 1,000 CFM paper race filter. I will test it at the track, but based on everything I have read, I will be surprised if it makes a difference over my $20 Specter chrome air cleaner assembly.

Here is a link to the Wix race filter if anyone is interested:

I have seen a difference in wideband readings when replacing an air filter assembly at idle. It just make sense that it doesn't once you get out of the idle circuits and into the mains.

The filter media type may not be super important, but filter area does matter at max power (airflow). Most things I have read recommend at least a 14x3 for a strong small block.

I'll have to look into the offset base type. If it won't work I'll resale it

My idle fluctuates a bit as it is depending on the weather and what not.

i had this size filter originally but we found it was restricting the car on the dyno, so swapped the element for a 3" ITG foam filter in the same housing which worked fine.
