Today is the day! It's looking like the DA in Tucson will be between 4500ft and 5000ft this evening..... Oh well....it is what it is. It will still be good to finally get this thing down the track. Will hopefully have vids and timeslips posted tomorrow.

How much does it wiegh?
How much power are you making?

Nice job, congrats. Lookin forward to know how it does at the track.

Alright guys, the track results are in. I was able to get three passes in last night and probably could have gotten two or so more if I wanted to stay late. But, I was satisfied after three passes that I had set a pretty decent baseline for the car and that it wasn’t going to get much faster. So here are the details of each run. I had some pretty poor air to deal with but it’s par for the course this time of year in Tucson. All runs were made through the full exhaust (to include tailpipes) and the air cleaner removed. The race weight of the car after the third and final pass (with a ¼ tank of fuel remaining) was 3486, so all passes were made at or above that weight. The fuel was 87 octane from Shell (gotta love low compression motors at altitude for cheap racing). The DA for each pass is listed below. Winds were all but nonexistent and the coolant temps were consistently near 165 for each pass. Rear tire pressures were kept between 12 and 12.5 psi. All launches were off the transbrake at 3400RPM. Shifts were made at 6900-7000.

First pass (ever):
DA: 5018ft
60’: 1.74
1/8: 7.62
MPH: 91.51
1/4: 11.94
MPH: 113.29

Here’s the video. The first pass was against my buddy’s Magnacharged Trail Blazer SS. He tree’d me pretty bad but I made up the .3 difference by the 330’ mark. He ran a 12.75 @ 106.23. Pretty impressive SUV!

http://youtu.be/jaJ25K3ETdc

The second pass of the night was my best. The DA had dropped a little and I did a better burn out that resulted in a slightly better 60’ and ET. MPH was also up just slightly, presumably due to the slightly better air.

Second pass:
DA: 4762ft
60’: 1.71
1/8: 7.55
MPH: 92.17
1/4: 11.85
MPH: 113.80

This pass was made against a Vortech supercharged 4.6 Mustang. The stang ran 14.8 @ 98.

http://youtu.be/V5ZFh69W0dU

The air continued to improve as it got later, which resulted in my best MPH on the final pass. But, the 60’ fell back off to 1.74 again, which put me back in the 11.90’s.

Third pass:
DA: 4564ft
60’: 1.74
1/8: 7.62
MPH: 91.94
1/4: 11.92
MPH: 113.84

This pass I was lined up against a later model 2nd gen. He ran an impressive 8.30 @ 164.93!

http://youtu.be/cqTn7LgIVCg

Some of the things I want to try in the future will be my new cam, an HVH spacer, possibly a higher launch RPM, and I also want to try uncapping the headers. All in all I can't be too dissappointed considering the harsh DA, but I still thing my 60' time leave a lot to be desired. Here's a shot of the car loaded back on the trailer to head home.

Car is strong and making some power. That is low 11s at sea level. That 3400 pound with you or just the car?

Thanks speedtigger! Thats with me in the car and I'm about 225. So 3485 minus me puts the car around 3260 with a 1/4 tank of gas. Not too bad considering a complete interior and a 10-point cage. I would have guessed 3350 if I were a bettin man!

Congrats on the build! Is the breather on the valvecover sufficient enought to vent crankcase pressure? Just asking because I'm doing a similar build.

Thanks Mr. Bu. So far so good on the breathers, but I've got one in each cover which probably helps. No signs of blowby and everything seems sealed up well.

Calculators are giving between 400 and 422 RWHP base on ET and MPH at your altitude!

I expect you can get even better 60's times with your setup.

Is that with the Comp 228/230-114+2 cam you originally were using? Or did you pick a different cam? What cam are you thinking of switching to?

Your car is working great some tuning (looks like it running good but sometime playing with timed up and down a bit can yield some et other time not ), tweaking and good air and your going to take a lot of time of your ET!!!

The reason why I am asking about the cam is for my 68 Nova I was spec's a 222/234@ 50 and about .600 Lift ... I'm trying to see were my car will go in comparison. My car should be lighter but I am heavier....

Thanks Bruce. I'll take those rwhp numbers.....no problem, LOL. I'm hoping for much better 60' times in the future as well. I think the chassis is capable of better, along with the conveter. So, I just need tune a little more (chassis and motor both). I almost think the nose comes up a little too fast, hits the top of the suspension, starts back down but then stays nose up the rest of the way down the track. I may eventually knock the front shocks down from 90/10 to 70/30. Also think this low compression/big headed combo may like to come out a little higher than 3400, but testing will tell the tale.

Yeah, these runs were made with the 228/230-114 cam, so it's not at all optimized for these heads and single plane intake. My new cam is a 231/239-110. Since I have all the weather data (DA) from these runs, I should be able to correct my runs after the cam swap for a fair apples to apples comparison.

I made it out to the track today for some test runs with my new custom spec’d camshaft. The weather was decent (better overall DA than last time out) and the crowd at the track was very light. So, I was able to experiment this time with some different launch RPMs. As it turns out, after trying 3400 (last time out) 3600, 3800, and 4000……..the car definitely likes 3800 the best. The car ran all new best times today. The best 60’ was 1.68 (former best of 1.71), the best ET was 11.74 (former best was 1.85), and the best MPH was 115.45 (former best was 113.84). The MPH really came around later in the day, even though the DA was getting worse, but I have a feeling I was accidentally lifting before the stripe on the earlier passes because I didn’t make any changes that should have jumped up the MPH like that and the 1/8 mile MPHs are pretty close on all five runs.

Once I got home, I corrected my best pass from last time out (with the old cam) and my best pass from today, all down to sea level. This showed a “corrected” gain of .075 in ET and 1.4 MPH with the new cam. So all in all I’m pleased. The next time out I plan to test with the headers uncapped and I may also possibly test an HVH Supersucker as well.

Here are the details and vids of the runs. This time I’ll include the launch RPM too since I was changing it almost every pass. My buddy from work and his wife were videoing my runs and taking pics, so don’t mind the verbal commentary in the background. I guess they forgot video cameras also record sound……LOL. The vids aren’t the best…..but here they are anyway. No vid of the first pass for some reason?

Thanks man! I have a feeling it will be looking like that for a long, long time. I go through phases where I want to see it painted, but I think most of what bothers me is just the bodywork. I'd love to get the body a little nicer on it and just leave the paint as is!

After the pics I went home and installed my Caltrac bars and went out and made a few more hits. Man this thing hooks up great on the street! I can't wait to get it to the track! I still need to decide if I want to swap my cam first and be done with it, or whether or not I have the time and patience to do a before and after comparison. My current cam isn't at all optimized for this set up.
Man that car is sweet. I have the same wheels but can't stand any chrome. It looks like you are the same way if you are driving the car in primer. You should do what I did and paint the wheels black with a matte black or semi gloss but keep the center caps like they are to make the car and wheels stand out. Cost me all of about $30 worth of materials and a weekends worth of work. Gives the car the "working man's" look. Oh...and my paint job was $750. Just like you it looks good from 20-50ft. lol

Thanks man. I like what you've done with your Chevelle. The blacked out wheels look really cool on your car against the silver paint, but I'm not sure how that would look against a blacked out paint job like mine. I like to see just a little bit of polished aluminum and/or chrome against a flat black paint job like mine, just to set it off a bit. I'll have to send your pic to my buddy. He has a silver 69 Chevelle and that will give him a good idea of how it would look with a big cowl hood. Happy Turkey day.
