Funny on the 7.5s. I ran one in my 81 Malibu in 1996 with a pretty mild 454 in it. It would only ever break axles rolling out of the burnout box when the tires would bite to slow down. I put a set of Mosers in it and never had a problem after that. In 2000 I found a fairly well priced 8.5 so I swapped it in with a set of 28 spline Stranges, GM Eaton, and GM 3.73s and have a few dozen 9 second, sub 1.50 60 foot times. I have gone through three sets of brakes since then but no diff issues.

My brother ran his 7.5 equipped early 80s Malibu with a spool, cap studs and moser axles for 2 years behind a small block 400 with nitrous. I think it went mid elevens. He claims he got into the 10s before he sold it, but I never saw it.

I am thinking i will become determined to learn how to swap mounting brackets one day so i can make whatever rear work on nearly anything, as long as length is close or identical. The ford 8.8s are ridiculously plentiful and strong as a 12 bolt, but the 1500$ 12 bolts and 9 inch rears used are not easy to pass up when they are direct bolt ins! LOL

True. When I did my 78 Malibu I couldn't find a well priced 8.5 but I have 12 bolts coming out of my ears here are the shop. Grabbed a set of upper relocation brackets, built a quickie 4.10 12 bolt, bent some lines, and viola, I have 3 inches of rubber hanging outside my quarters. I bought some 16" 2000 Z28 rims and threw some drag radials and she has already hit a 1.51 60 foot. I found a set of Weld 10 holes that fit perfect so I threw a set of used 275 Mickeys on it and matched the fronts.

That is great, I am wanting to learn how to get the geometry correct on getting the mounts located in that perfect position.

I think your issue is going to be torque arm mounting. Where it attaches is cast into the centersection. Does someone make an add on bracket or something?

People have made brackets that case around the center section, but I am wanting to do t with any vehicle, not just my mullet rides. Am sure I could fab something for that any day, it is still getting mounts welded on and at the proper position I am worried about.

The track was really sticky - when the tree came down I hit it and the axle started to hop (which it never has before).

I think the rear siezed up for a second and took the trans out.

Wheel hop is an absolute killer. GNs would do it when they start to make a little power. Oddly enough, mine was never prone to it and I remember my rear suspension being stock.

HA! I've got plans for my tax refund too:

It might be slow, but it will not break again!

The Dana60 being slower than a 12 bolt or 9" is a myth.
I run a Dana60, virtually indestructable, and a wise choice.

Before, I was attempting to go the lightweight route - lighter tranny, lighter rear etc. etc. and hope things would hold together because the car weighed less as a result.

Unfortunately, I must now switch to the heavy (heavy duty) route, and the car will put on some weight, but hopefully I will break things less often.
