Default Alternator wiring differances?

OK, heres the question. I keep reading that the F body alternator uses 1 wire on the 4 wire plug. I read that the corvette alternator uses 2 wires to the 4 wire plug. Than I read that the 04 and up trucks ALSO use 2 wires. I open the hood to my 2000 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3 and it uses 1 wire to the plug. WOW. So I have to ask, what the heck is with all the differances?

Is the differance with the ECM and wiring on the donor vehicle? Or is it in the alternator?

Im using an F body alternator bracket mounted up high on the cylinder head. To ME, all the alternators for the f body and trucks, all years look alike externally. So do you just choose whatever alternator you want and wire it accordingly? This is for a carbed swaped vehicle, so the ecm is not an issue.

Thanks in advance for the help. Thanks, Eric L

I can only say, the Y body ('Vette) alternator needs 12v to the "F" terminal ("B" pin).

I thought the vette needed 2 wires to the plug? Is one a constant 12v and the other pin is a keyed 12 volt with a 480 resistor? Eric L

So you are running the constant hot to the stud and one constant hot to the plug? Are you running a resistor? Thanks, Eric L

I was under the impression that they needed a 480 ohm resistor in line. Thanks for the clarification. Eric L

Did you figure this out Eric? I have sort of the same issue on my LS3 swap- wiring harness has 4 pin 1 orange wire, 2010 camaro alt that has a oval 2 pin input? will this affect the ECM if i change out connectors & keep it 1 wire?

I know that around 04 or 05 they changed to the round connector. But I dont know how many wires they used in it. You will either have to switch to an older alternator, or change the connector. My best advice would be to look up a wiring schematic for the harness your using and for the Camaro alternator and see where the wires trace back to. And no, I havent figured out my problem yet, lol. But I havent been messing around with it much this week. From what im seeing in searches in here, for the older LS alternators with the 1 brown wire, you connect it to a keyed hot with a resistor in line. But im not positive on that yet. Theres about 4 different alternators that all look alike, but are wired differantly. I just cant find out why. Eric L

I've got the corvette alternator in mine, but using the one-wire approach in the pic below.

Then yours is wired to the "L" terminal which does need a resistor while mine is wired to the "F" terminal which does not ("L" being lamp and "F" being field).
