Default 3rd attempt to build 5.3...lol

I was going to do low budget 5.3L with flat tops/ milled heads, and carb... Before I built I traded it for an alum 6.0L (L76) which I built up and got running (EFI). Well got $5K for the L76 and GMPP controller kit but retained my accessory setup, headers, and mounts. (had new cam, Melling pump, ARP, head studs, LS3 intake...)

While I was building Chevelle I got another 5.3 runner for $225, bought Performer intake ($251), MSD 6LS ($267), and air cleaner ($45). Sold the stuff for $1650!

Bought a knocking 5.3 the next day and tore down to find beautiful bearings. Issue had to be the one bad lifter.

So, I have the block with crank sitting there. Friend has the 4.8 flat tops that I can have. Bought new rings for a steal ($30) so that will be rotating assembly.

Cam will most likely be the ***** Thumpr (feel free to comment)... 227/241 .563/.546 109

Have a set of LS7 lifters I got with LS7 rotating assembly. Also have an extra set of LS6 headgaskets that I got free.

Heads are going to get mild port, 2.00" stock intake valves, and mill. Also throw on a set of new blue springs. (I know...pushing them to limits)

So one question is what mill should I do? Thinking with the cam spec I don't want too much compression. Although the CC will most likely go up a bit with deshrouding.

This is a temp motor for my Chevelle. I want to make some power but sound is important as it will help motor sell.

Please give some feedback or reccomendations...

Thanks!

Just a few thoughts:
A knocking motor that you did not find for sure the source of the knock is worrisome.
I myself would not even think of using anything but a good valve spring like the PAC 1518s.
The rest of it doesn't sound too bad, but I don't know how much you can mill with that cam. Hopefully somebody can chime in with better insight on that.

Only thing different i would do with all of that is use a 2216 Edelbrock cam. It sounds fantastic and in my stock dish piston aluminum 5.3, it pushed my 86 TA to 7.7 in the 1/8th at 91 MPH with no tuning and the car only has AC removed and a Glass hood. That weight is all back with sub frames and custom X member for the big heavy 4L80. Not to mention the LS6 springs will hold that cam fine.

Hmm, cam does look good... Lower lift for springs and still good duration.

ZONES89RS, what stall are you running? I am doing a cheap Jeg's one as it is a temporary motor setup. Note I will be making a touch more power/torque with the higher comp and slight head work. Car will weigh around 3500 lbs. I attached a screenshot of my choices.

Supposed to be a 4000 but foot brakes just over 2000. The jegs 3000 I have used before would work fine. Was a decent converter, I have used 2 for myself and a couple friends as well.

Ordered the 2216 cam and 2700-3000 stall. Both shipped today but put the stall on craigslist. Buddy of mine bought the 'son of tranzilla' t56 and will sell me his t56 he's been through. Lol...always something

Getting excited to build motor! Need to find a pan soon.

Also dropped off LQ4 block at machine shop. Being sonic tested. Using LS7 crank and titanium rods with with custom pistons or may discuss ability to take to 4.125" bore and run pistons I have. (In rotating assembly $210!) I hear some people have done by filling lower part of coolant passages? I guess that is where they are thinner. This motor will be carbed with a Vic Jr in a Fox body!

Never heard of that personally. The ls7 crank will have to get turned down allot on the mains. They are larger.

Main/rod journals are same size... 2.650" and 2.100". The snout is longer but a spacer fixes that.
