Default I got my ls1 started with a screw driver

Ok so my ls1 wasn't starting it was just clicking. I put a screwdriver across the lugs of the selonoid on the starter and it fired up. What is making me have to do that and what do I need to fix? Btw I can't find the under hood fuse box with the relays in it to check those. I bought the car about two weeks ago and the prior owner is not returning any calls.
***Update: I went to go to try an start up with the screw driver today and it didn't turn over just kept spinning. Now it doesn't even click when pushing the button. I'm lost.
My power locks quit working at the same time as this

Thank you

I don't understand your question. Are you concerned it is doing that?

If your ignition key is switched off, your ignition box is seeing constant power and not a switched source.

If you cross the battery wire and ignition wires, it will try to start. If the key is in the on position, it will start and run.

Oh... I didn't realize his question was that basic.

Regardless, something else is going on if it actually fired up. Doing that would allow the starter to turn over but it shouldn't be seeing any power to his ignition box.

Okay now I understand.

You obviously have constant power to the starter (if it starts with a screwdriver). Depending which terminals you contact with the screwdriver will determine what actually happens.

Check your battery terminal connections. Make sure all the nuts on the starter studs are tight (be careful, some of them snap easily and ruin the starter). Make sure the ground on the drivers side of the block is tight.

I will go out on a limb and say it's more than likely the starter solenoid (you need to replace the starter). Try tapping on the solenoid (the small round cylinder on the starter) with a half inch ratchet, hammer or anything else... don't smack the ever living crap out of it so you break something but do not be too gentle.

Now try starting the vehicle how you normally do. Chances are good, it might start temporarily. If it does, you defiantly need a new starter.

If it doesn't, you need to use a test light to see what's going on. You will need to test the big power wire and have a buddy keep the key in the start position while you check the smaller wires. If the test light lights up, it's the starter.

Either way, it sounds like a pretty simple issue.

I had the starter tested and it came back good so could it still be the starter? I ran into another problem today and I'm not even getting a click anymore it's just not doing anything and the push to start button isnt lighting up. I might have to take it to a mechanic when I get the extra money. For some strange reason my power locks went out too
Thanks for the reply and sorry to bother you

What the mother f**k. What car is this in? Is it carbed or EFI? Sounds like some shitty wiring

His starter only clicks when he turns the key, but the car starts and runs when he shorts out the solenoid lugs. So not the starter, maybe not dirty battery posts but possibly still a bad solenoid. But my guess is too much voltage drop in the S terminal wiring (i.e. bad ignition switch).

short of cleaning up all the ignition switch wiring it might be easier to just do a remote start solenoid.

Back in high school I had to keep a screwdriver handy to start my 6 cylinder camaro. Guess not many of you guys grew up poor.

Is your battery dead? And did you wire brush the battery lugs whether they looked clean or not?

Bro... you car doesn't have an ignition switch and a fancy push to start button? I thought the purpose of those buttons was to eliminate an ignition cylinder.

It sounds like somebody's hacked up project car... not an easy thing to fix over the Internet but any competent mechanic can probably fix it in less than an hour.
