Guys with short belts...

I wondered that myself, but probably the most common alternator only set up has the alternator in the low F body position so even less wrap on both WP and crank pulley. I've been running like this for 8 years or so, no charging or cooling issues and I've never thrown a belt.
Since no one had issues I figured this set up would be OK. Some guys add a tensioner where the idle pulley was, but doesn't seem necessary
If you get the alternator above the head you will be golden.

I must have something weird going on...only like to throw belts in the 7500ish range.
I don't know....going to recheck and address things.

Here ya go Doug. Get rid of the hula hoop. Put on an electric water pump. Then you can let that bad boy spin away. And all your troubles will simply go away. You won't be throwing this little belt off. The best part of the electric water pump is being able to shut the motor off and still cool everything off very fast. Not to mention you don't have to worry about aeration from cavitation at high rpm causing poor cooling when you really need it.

TT, that may be an option one day....but not in the cards right now.
I found something off. used a straight edge and checked crank pulley to alt....good. Checked crank to tensioner....good.
Alt to tensioner....no good.
Moved some stuff around, shim here, shim there.....all less than .100" out now. Ssssooo, time will tell.

I did cut off the top ear on the alt mount.

All done last weekend. Finally tested (weather sucked last week) BUT.... let her idle in the 88* humid air we have right now.
45 minutes at idle, only went to 145*-150*, has no T-stat, and only 1 fan running
Never rev'd over 3-4K, but belt looked good.
