Default Is a tuner needed with a carb?

Just wondering, the thing I dislike the most about having an LS engine is the fact that I cant tune it myself without learning complicated software like HP Tuners. If I go with a carb/msd setup, will that eliminate the need for a tuner?

If you buy the MSD new, it usually comes with a few 'chips' you can plug in that have preloaded timing tables on them.
They're not the greatest IMO.

If you can tune a carb....then no problem.
We can get you a timing table to start with, and you can play from there to fine tune.(easy)

Thanks guys. I most likely wont spend the 2k just to go back to old tech, but I really miss being able to tune the car myself.

With HPtuners or EFILive, you ARE tuning the car yourself! They are just tools. And once done, it's DONE. Nothing goes out of whack unless you do it yourself. Carbs and distributors ALWAYS must be tinkered with. I don't know about you, but once I set something, I like to forget it! lol. My 2013 pickup has over 100k miles. Original plugs, and runs as well as the day I bought it. Never happen with carb/distributor. I am SO glad we are past that!

It is nice to be able to come home and tinker with the carb and without looking at a computer screen. I get enough of that at work. There is something about getting the smell of gas on your hands as well.

This has been discussed to death but you can go carb'd for much less than $2k.

The internet and wideband O2 gauges have made tuning a carb much easier and the results much more precise. The trial and error learning curve has been greatly simplified.

I had never touched a carb in my life other than a lawn mower. Got a quick fuel carb, did a little reading in this section and absolutely love carbs now. it's extremely easy compared to the learning curve of HPT or EFI Live.
