How much power will a 8.5" 10 bolt handle?
Hey guys,
I'm building a '67 camaro rs/ss and I am putting a 427 bbc in the car with afr heads and a couple of other things and plan on making 650 horsepower. Will a 8.5" 10 bolt handle this much power or is it a no brainer to go with a 12 bolt. I'm not drag racing the car, just plan on making a fun driving street car but at the same time I'll probably take it to the drag every now and then just to have fun. Thanks

8.5 10bolt isnt the same as the fbody rearend. 8.5 is pretty stout, i would build the 8.5 for now, then later on look for 12 bolt if you could find one

The 8.5 will hold up fine as long as your not doing wheelstands with it, esp. if your running an auto. 8.5's are actually pretty strong, and I'd run it for now and save up for the 12 bolt.

8.5 10 bolt's hold up pretty well but I would do a c-clip eliminator if you plan on running it. I have broken the large pin that holds the spider gears together and once that comes out, the c-clips drop out and next thing you know your axles shoot out!!! Almost feels like you lost your clutch then the *** end sits down a bit and you watch your tires start walking out from your side mirror!!! I did that on two different 10 bolt 8.5's with, what I consider to be moderately build small block Gen I motors. For piece of mind I would do a c-clip eliminator weather it be a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt.

It was a fun street car, meaning street tires and long burnouts for fun, but I did run it at the track with slicks going mid-low 11's, never had problems.

It is really amazing how many people dont know what their talking about. The 7.5s suck yeah thats well known by everyone this thread says nothing about a 7.5 10 bolt 8.5s hold up really well just put good parts in it and the clip eliminator and dont look back wont cost you as much as a 12 bolt and will hold up fine for what you plan on doing.Everyone reads horror stories about stock 10 bolts busting not all 10 bolts are created equal there is a difference.
