Picked up my car from the a/c shop. Cost alittle under $1200 to replace the compressor and accumulator, flush the system out, vacuum and charge it up again. Got a warranty though.

Thumbs up 160 deg thermostat and reprogram of fan speeds!

Finally decided to cool down my LS1 today. Got a good deal on a 160 stat/housing/gasket ($27.85, tax included). Two bolts, one hose clamp, and one wire harness remove/replace later and I reprogrammed the 160 stat fan speeds into the PCM. Will take a couple of days to get all the air out, so far no leaks. After the air is displaced/vented out the overflow/recovery bottle I'll look for leaks more carefully. Thats what I did for my girl today!

New guy here...recently purchased a '98 Z28. Started it all off today with the free mods: Cutting the EGR tube flush with the top of the intake, and opening up the base of the stock airbox. More to follow...

Red face New radiator cap (see what happens when you take the old one off?)

Well, when I did the 160 deg thermostat, seems the old OEM radiator cap decided to not 'reseal' on the radiator. I was having a lot of air in the radiator (squishy top hose, not firm, before warming up). After checking for a leak from replacing the 187 degree to 160 degree thermostat job, traced it down to that radiator cap. It was not sealiing, preventing the system from drawing the fluid back into the radiator from the overflow bottle. Tried cleaning the cap's gasket a couple of warm/cool cycles and gave up trying to save my $. A search of yahoo and google led me to O'Rielly's where I purchased a generic 18lb cap which solved my 'air in radiator' problem. Just $2.82 total (not counting fuel because I was driving by there anyway doing my 'as-needed' list of things to do that day) and my girl now has no more air in the system. In about two more years (maybe three) I will go ahead and replace the radiator fluid again. As I remembered, that hose was not that firm for quite a while, so that cap has needed to be replaced even before I did that 160 thermostat upgrade.
