Default 1979 Camaro Handling

I'm looking to get a 2nd gen Camaro, '74-'82 and I was wondering how these cars handle in stock form. Anyone know? How do they compare to a 4th gen?

Terrible. I have a 75 Type LT. All options for that year. Car feels like it wants to lift off the ground at 100+ mph. But the aftermarket is getting bigger and its relatively cheap to make these cars show and strip worthy.

I have a 80z and it drives like an old muscle car. It rattles, shakes and its loud. But i like it better then my 4th gen for weekend duty.

i have a 78 camaro not sure if the original shock, but its coil over and *** long as there were no bumps at 100 it drove perfect, but the back is really stiff and bumps suck at all speeds. better shocks on back and its allot better

Thumbs up

I have never driven one, but my friends own older Camaros and they say they handle like crap.
Best thing to do, change the upper/lower control arms, spindles, do coil over shocks and a nice thick sway bar. There are other things as well, but you get the idea.
(I want to do a pro-touring '69 Camaro eventually and I will be replacing the sub frame with a top of the line sub frame with coil overs. The rear set up will be a quadra link. Should handle like it's on rails.)

It's no 4th gen, but it handles quite decent considering it's leaf sprung, 1960s underpinnings. What surprised me is how well the thing brakes with discs up front and drums out back. With new bushings, shocks, thicker swaybars and up to date tires, they're not bad at all. Very tailhappy, but nothing too scary.

Look into the old Trans Am series cars. Those boys were doing amazing things with stock junk and race tires.

If you're itching for an old school, do it.

I had a 79 Camaro and had the Vette brakes and products monleaf front suspension. It requires some fabrication since the spring runs thru the front subframe. Its a pretty sweet set up and the car handled great. It also had a bad *** look because the front was so low. The ride height is adjustable. Here was the chassis mods I had done.
-Vette Brakes and products Monoleaf Conversion
-Vette Brakes and products Tubular control arms
-Polyurethane Body mounts
-Southside Machine subframe connectors
-Southside Machine lift bars
I dont think it would out handle my 02 Z28 but it corner awesome.

I did some checking on how to update mine and I found there is a few upgrades you can do by buying the FIREAM kit for the 2nd gen TAs. you cant use everything cuz it comes with engine parts but its a good way to get your suspention parts in a package

I had a 77 T/A in the mid 80's. It went straight real good.

Handeling was improved when I went to an 86 camaro. You know what the 4th gen is over that.

They are fun cars, but you would not want to autoX one stock.
