What Happened to the Late Great 01-02 SS?

How many vehicles offered 345-350 (actual) or more horsepower in 1998-2002? And how many of those stickered for under $30k? How about under $25k? Ratings varied between 305-345hp depending on trim level, model year and SLP options, but all of them made about 350hp stock - same as C5. There was no better performance value available in the US new car market in 1998-2002 - in fact, few cars made significantly more power stock regardless of MSRP. And as for its closest peer, Mustang GT, LS1 F-body was about 100hp ahead during that time frame. Not sure how anyone could consider ~350hp stock as being "low" for a car from the 1998-'02 era....especially one that stickered as low as $20,470 (base price for a '98 Z28.
Agreed.

Thanks,I agree 100% about liking the fact that you just don't see these cars every day and never see SS hardtops like yours or mine.
I've yet to see another SS hardtop in my area,I see a few SS's around (not many) but mostly T-tops and once in a while a ragtop. Makes it fun having something rather unique.

I wanted to add that I heard rumors that LS1 F-Bodies were cutting too deep into C5 sales which is another reason GM nixed them. I really wish that had made more. A modern day 4th Gen (F-Body with modern day performance packages) would be the god of affordable performance cars today.
Yeah, it really depends on what you're looking for too though. I've owned a 95, 97, 99, 01 and 02 F-Body, a 15 5th Gen, and a 17 6th Gen...
If you want something for raw power, easy and inexpensive to mod throw me in the back seat and I don't care what the rest of the car does as I'm launching on two rear tires... 4th Gen wins hands down no contest, cheap, inexpensive aftermarket, fast, affordable, and just damn fun. 4th Gens do however have a tendency of nickling and diming you though.
If you want something refined, fresh, modern, still capable of handing butts to modern vehicles on the road of almost all categories except exotics, 6th Gen wins and is a marvel of vehicular engineering its practically..the perfectly engineered performance vehicle in STOCK form..but when the mod bug hits.. things get dicey as they're not very mod friendly and require special and expensive after market parts (some of which are not yet even perfected) in order to overcome its modern engine engineering - but in stock form still leaves you with more than enough power to enjoy given that the stock SS 6th Gens are tapping into the 11's which is 2 seconds faster than the 4th Gen. Suspension and Gearing on both the 5th and 6th gen is superior to the 4th as well.
So for a gearhead wanting to make a fun and fast platform - 4th Gen, for anyone wanting something refined, doesn't wanna wrench on it.. 6th Gen..
After owning a 5th Gen for a year, unfortunately I just couldn't fall in love with it.. It's a nice car dont get me wrong but it just does not feel like a Camaro when driving it. It feels oversized and bulky.
Subjectively, I do agree that the 4th gen is a "better" car than a 5th or 6th gen Camaro....for me. But much of this has to do with my personal preferences and opinions regarding such areas as gadgets, simplicity, styling, driving experience, etc. To the average person, they'd rather have a newer car with a warranty, fresher parts, faster stock acceleration, and modern tech gadgets. Most consumers would agree that the newer cars are better, but that doesn't necessarily make them right or wrong in a subjective comparison.

4th gen LS1 cars were impressive machines when they were new, blistering stock performance compared to anything else in their price range and still worthy contenders even when compared to significantly more expensive cars. The 6th gen is bringing some of that recognition back to the nameplate, unlike 5th gen which never dominated its closest competition (Mustang.)

I'm looking to buy an 01-02 low miled, care for SS. I love the GMMG Camaros also. If you know where to look? Any help appreciated. I'm checking Craigslist, ebay and this forum's classified section. Not easy .... ;(
Agreed -- The 6th gen is really nice. Why did the 5th gen not compare to the Mustang of the same year, in your opinion?

On the other hand, 6th gen Camaro lost weight, gained power, and received additional transmission gearing (auto) - allowing more time spent in an optimal rpm range during WOT - all of which has put it ahead of Mustang.

All those sources you've listed, plus sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com, would be my recommendations. GMMG cars are quite rare, so finding one of those may take some time. But nice LS1 SS cars pop up for sale frequently on Ebay, CL, this site, and those classifieds sites I listed above.

I don't know what region you're in, or how far you're willing to travel, or if you want an auto/manual/hardtop/t-top/convertible, or what your budget is, but here is a good example of a top tier specimen listed on Autotrader:

Thanks for the kind words, and good luck in your search.

Not sure why that site isn't working for you, I have no problem accessing it.

That's a pretty 35th LE amigo but I was never a huge fan of these 35th LE Camaros. I'm looking for a normal 01-02 SS, preferably black. I love the GMMG Camaros also, but GLWS!
