Retro vs new style
Its more than obveous that GM reads these forums, so lets give them an idea of what us f-body buyers/owners would rather have if GM comes back out with them.
I personally dont care, as long as it performs good and looks good.

I'm going new style. I love the old school cars just as much as the late greats. However I feel its an insult to try and make a car look retro, especially when you do a shotty job like ford did.

I agree with both opinions, but i dont want something too futureistic. I really like the 4gen f-body and think that would a be a good starting point. Kind of like the C6 vs the C5. Not too much different but enough to count!!

camaro lends itself towards either way. the firebird doesn't. some cars like the mustang and porsche stayed so close to the original look that retro looks close to the newest model anyway

My only requirements are that they make the car lighter, more powerfull (LS7 as and option please) and get rid of the truck stance. And i just pray GM doesnt do something dumb like make it fwd.

I kind of think the Camaros were ugly up until the 3rd gens. 1st gen isn't ugly but I don't think it was a sporty design like how the 82s were. Everything in 1982 was ugly but the new Fbody was gorgeous at the time. Come on guys think how cool Knight Rider was. I don't think the Fbodys were ever as pretty in the public's eye like a Shelby Mustang was. I think it would be a big mistake to go totally retro, something like the C6/C3 Corvette would be great.

Did you guys hear how GM wants to dump either buick and/or pontiac. Wonder what either would mean for a new camaro? I figure that without a pontiac counter part (GTO) there will not be a camaro.

Trouble with retro is, it makes it too easy to go lazy
and cheap (like the new Mustang). I'd like to drive
something that looked like a '68 Firebird convertible,
sure. But then, I'd just go and buy the '68. There's
a fine line between "tribute" and "lame-*** retread"
and GM couldn't find a fine line if John Delorean held
their ears and stuck their noses in it.

Retro is a great idea, if only done with a sense of style and reason. We have all seen the result of overdone retro and lets hope GM has too. I voted retro, mainly cause of my love for the first camaro's. Either way would be fine with me but I beleive GM has to go retro to be able to market it and sell it. To me, the best Camaro is the '69, body wise. Gen 2 would also make a great retro, gen 3 is totally out, too new and too square. The obvious choise is a '67, but the body lines of a '69 can't be beat.
So far I have owned a:
1969
1967 RS (stupidly sold it long time ago)
1995 Z28 (wife killed it)
1995 Z28
And now a 1969 getting a LS1/m6 and corvette suspension.

Retro can suck depending on what year they try to imitate. Most people prefer the looks of 1st gen cars, but then they would run the risk of being "Ford Copyists" so that is out. 2nd gens were butt ugly (except pre '74) and are probably the least popular today. If they could somehow manage to make a beautiful AND aggressive looking car like 3rd gen IROC/Z28s then that might be cool. Overall I think a brand new design with some "traditional" styling cues would be a good idea.

But as for retro, you have to watch how you go. I think companies have the impression that if it worked once, we can bring it back, and it will work again. Not always the case. The way that they go with the F-body will determine on what demographic that are aiming for. I believe LS1 based F-bodies were targeted for the 40-55 year old male longing to have the muscle cars they had 25 years ago.
I believe any F-body enthusiast would drive any car based on just about any year previous. I certainly would drive the Firebird based on a 68, but also just the same if it was based on a 77. Too bad the "enthusiast" catagory doesn't fall into the demographic. I think we would all be happier with the end result.
