Default What does Camaro mean?

Do any of you guys know the orgins of the word Camaro? Is it a type of animal or something, or is it just a made up word? I'm just curious. Same with Corvette.

Though the car's name was contrived with no meaning, General Motors researchers found the word in a French dictionary as a slang term for "friend" or "companion." Ford Motor Company researchers discovered other definitions, including "a shrimp-like creature" and an arcane term for "loose bowels"! In some automotive periodicals before official release, it was code-named "Panther".

Corvette was the name of a warship in the 1700-1800s. Somewhat smaller than a frigate.

And since these cars were made in Canada, where there are alot of "french" people at, the Camaro=friend seems right.

In Spanish, I believe that Camaro means weak. So no these cars aren't Spanish.

GM marketing THOUGHT it meant "pal" in French, but later it was said that they made a mistake, and it actually doesn't mean anything in French.

Well if you pronounce it Camara, like a mullet wearin' redneck, then it means a chamber or house.
