We really like the convenience and manners you get with the LS1/T56 combo for in town driving. It has a little get up and go when you want it, but starts right away, gets great gas milage, idles smoothly at 800rpm, and definatly gets the double take at a car show. Build for whatever power level you want, but I would highly reccomend a Gen III motor with a 6 speed. Also, update you front suspension geometry, night and day difference!

just strap a crate 572, that should be plenty to handle the local street scene. it's a proven mountain motor that will start right up. sides what sounds better than big inches thumping at a redlight?

X's whatever. A 572 crate motor will make more power than your 69 can handle unless you do quit a bit of work to the suspension. 700 HP on pump gas.

I put a 383 in my 67. If I did it again, I would go with a EFI LSX block. A lot of power, great MPGs, onboard computer to play with On a negative side, more complex to troubleshoot/tune than the old trusty SBC.

i like how everyone has these thousands and thousand of dollar ideas... it all varies on what you want to do with the car... what kind of hp you want to make.... is it a show car? a cruise around town on nice days car... a track car.... or do u just want to put the pedal down and leave yer guts on the side of the road.... it all varies... in an old school car though no matter what... i think ide go with straight motor... no new ls1's or ls2's or **** like that... now for what size u want.. its up to u liek i said... whats the car going to be used for

Stay old school man...snag one of GM crate BBC or build one from scratch.

Good luck on a great sounding project!

I like the idea of a mildly hopped up LS2 and a built 6L80e with those paddle shifters and aftermarket tranny controller would be my suggestion. Good power, good manners, you can cruise the slushbox in automagic mode, but you have 6 forward speeds you can choose between of you want to go faster. It's a good all-around compromise.
