Check with SLP. The 96 was actually a Z/28 SS. It will have both badges on it. it is the only year like that. The SS package was added on to the Z/28 by SLP. It is the first year they brought the SS back.

The 96/97 SS was rated 310 hp with the optional 2OTL exhaust. The hp improvements over a base Z28 came from the ram air style hood scoop ducting cool air to an air box mounted on top the motor and the SLP catback. Some say they had better-flowing exhaust manifolds as well but I've heard mixed stories on that. I had a 96 SS with the 2OTL exhaust and have to say it was one of the best sounding catbacks I've ever heard on a car from the factory.

If you need to know anything about a 96 SS don't hesitate to ask me, I work at GM and been there for the past 14 years, I have a 96 SS #2323 and I'm the first owner. Yours is black and by the way, there are 818 Black Camaro SSs in 1996. The rarest color is Teal, only 77 were made.
As for having the intake manifold ported, that's not true. There's an old saying that I love : "If I would get a nickle everytime someone said I had an ss I would be filthy rich by now". Not everything people say is true, the motor in 96 received no modifications what so ever on the SS cars, as a matter of fact the only mod under the hood is the ram air induction.
I wish I could send you all the info about the 96 SSs, I have it all in papers that I collected during all these years and I pretty much know and can answer everything you need about a 96 Camaro SS.
2410 were made, 2263 are in the U.S the rest 147 are in Canada. the total in 1997 was 3038 including 957 30th anniversary cars. I just can't stop talking about all this so let me know if you have any question and I'll give you the true right difinate answer, not what people hear.

And by the way, if you saw a Z28 along with an SS emblem on the car, that owner just added an ss emblem on it, if you need to know how to find out if a car is an SS just look on the door, in the glove box and or under the hood for the sticker, if it's not there, then that not an SS, that guy can also modify his doors to a lamborghini style and then what!! is he gonna call his car a lambourghini?? I don't know if I even spelled it right. Good luck :::::::::::

Any pics of your 96 SS justforparts? Do you have the original brochure for the 1996 Z28 SS from SLP? Just curious. I have two of them that I managed to get from an SLP rep in Charlotte, NC at a car show and like yourself I've collected a few things including the GMHTP magazine comparing the 96 Camaro SS with the 96 Mustang Cobra. I also have a video from Motortrend comparing the 96 V6 Firebird, Z28 SS, and the Firehawk...and a video from Motortrend with Jim Scoutten driving the 1997 30th year Anniversary LT4. Pretty cool stuff! I drove an automatic Teal before I bought mine.

They are getting harder to find in good shape with low miles. I love mine and don't think I will ever get rid of it. Just to add a little info, the first 150 or so got extrude honed exhaust manifolds. SLP decided that the gains were not worth the trouble so they stopped doing that. I too have collected all kinds of ads and docs on these cars.

I have then thinking of selling my 96 SS but then I just keep thinking what I'll do next.

I sold a red 96 SS to a member on the forum here with like 13,000 miles a couple years ago (3-4). It did not have both badges on the outside, but did on the plaque on the dash i believe.. Also, it did not have the exhaust coming out from one side, it had the dual rectangular tips like the Z28s... Pretty sure the previous owner did not change the exhaust... He bought it and stored it... I've seen cars with the exaust only on one side, and it looks stupid to me!
