Default driveshaft angle

hello to all. how critical is the drive angle with lsx swaps. the drive angle should be between 1-5 degrees with 2 degrees being perfect. also how do you measure the drive angle. thanks in advance.

You can measure the angle on the trans and diff yokes using one of these:

The idea is to get the angle the same, bot opposite, ie trans 2 degrees down, diff 2 degrees up. Get it as close as possible, if you dont have vibration problems, you're ok.

Default drive angle

hello to all again. about the drive angle, i thought you just place the angle finder against the driveshaft, if it is between 1 and 5 degrees, start drivin your lsx swapped bowtie.

That's MUCH easier than the way I did it.
Hey, and if it's off a few degrees, park it on a hill and measure the angle again!!!!!!

Drive angle on a LSx car is just as important or no different that any other car. U-Joint are a major concern should the angle be greatert than the normal 1-5 degree's.

One thing to note.. your crank shaft is directly in line with your Transmission output shaft (on most normal car/trucks). With the car/truck on the ground at ride height and weight. You should measure your rear end pinion and transmission output shaft angle (or what I did was used the front of the crankshaft (as crawing under the car on the ground was not possible.

If you can not reach under the car/truck, then with that gauge, it has a magnet that you can attach it to the pinon or trans and then lower the car/truck and read it then.

Good Luck.

After I installed an LS1/4l60e with the Edelbrock kit in a 72 Chevelle 'vert, the trans output shaft measured around -4.5 degrees and the pinion was around 0 degrees. I used some Edelbrock adjustable control arms to get the rear end pinion high enough to get the angles to zero out. I also had to get a longer rear brake hose for the diff. You can jack the car up to take the measurements, just make sure that the car is level and is supported by the tires or rear end and not the body so the suspension is compressed as it would be parked on level ground.

You should get the angles sorted out first so that you can get a more accurate measurement for your driveshaft that may have to be modified depending on what transmission was in the car prior to the swap. I had to shorten mine since I had a 350 Turbohydro.

It's a little long but here is a link to a PDF document about drive line angles, what they should be, how to set them and why.
