Jeep XJ 5.3l swap - fuel pump

Default Jeep XJ 5.3l swap - fuel pump

Before I got the great idea of swapping in a 5.3l, I replaced the stock tank and fuel pump on my '88 XJ. The factory pump appears to be rated at 95psi. I'm wondering why I couldn't use this pump with the Corvette regulator/return? Am I missing something?

Also, the rollover valves connect to a vacuum canister now. Can I just chop those off by the tank and use some type of check valve?

That replacement fuel pump should be 65psi (not 95) and it runs at 24 GPH, which still should be plenty.
Did the Jeep have a external regulator from the factory? If so, then use the corvette filter/regulator in line and you will be fine.

Looks like 45GPH is the rating on OE.

My pump came from Oreilly and I don't find the specs on it. On NAPA there appears to quite a range for specs on supposed OE pumps. The lowest I'm seeing is about 18GPH and 65psi for a 4.0l. NAPA has a Bosch listed at 45gph and 90+psi too. I guess I'll give it a try and see. Worst case, that Bosch looks like a pretty easy alternative if there is a problem. The stock Jeep has a vac regulator on the rail.

What about the stock Jeep lines from the rollover valves to the vac cannister? Can those just be chopped off close to the tank with a check ball of some type?

We use generic E2000 pumps mounted on the rail.
We have never been able to use a stock Jeep pump to run any of these LS swaps.

Great. Is it a flow, pressure or longevity issue? I called the manufacturer of my pump and they gave me 40-50 GPH and 90-110psi static. So, I was thinking I'd probably be ok. Their tech said he thought the pump would be fine operating at 60psi. The lazy part of me sure wants to try. Thanks for the input.

I do not recall the years we have tried this with but any of them have not run right using the stock pump.

I am the PCM guy with these projects, they call me to do the PCM and then call me when it dont run right and I keep asking them about the FP. How does the Jeep FP regulate pressure? There have been lots of other questions asked but in the end, they put a pump on and all is fine.

I went back and forth with one guy that has been putting the hemi's in the jeeps and used the stock jeep FPs with out issue. He could not answer alot of the questions I have asked him but in the end I think he put a different FP on the rig and I have not heard from him....

Given that I have this pump and it's basically new, I'll probably give it a try. The stock XJ 4.0l has a vacuum regulator on the rail to bring it to about 30psi. I notice the stock wiring has a relay and a ballast resistor that is supposed to make the pump quieter except at WOT. I wonder if that ballast is in the mix of problems. I'll get rid of it of course. Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll report back whenever I get there.

Yeah, that's the regulator on the stock Jeep. Per above, I'm going to use the Corvette regulator.

There is one Jeep pump that I know that will work on LS motors. Thats the 05-06 TJ pump. I know because I run one. Runs at 60 psi at the fuel rail.
