LS1 or 6.0L Iron block Camaro Ok so in December my Camaro is going to a friend's shop to swap the old 3.8L for a V8 but I have two choices. I can either but a full conversion packaged LS1 with complete engine, harness, pcm, accesories, and transmission for 3k or I can buy a 6.0L iron block, a new built 4L80E, and harness for an extra 1k. Whichever one I choose they will be getting two T71 turbochargers(running low boost at first until I'm sure the bottom end can take the 16psi i'm shooting for) and either a 12bolt or ford 9" rear. My question is which engine should I go for that has the potential for 1200hp later on with a good bottom end on a budget. I was thinking at first of just getting the LS1 and later getting it stroked with forged pistons but lately I've heard lots of good stuff about the 6.0L iron block. What do you guys think?

Iron Block is alot stronger then the aluminum block.... You can find a Lq9 for 1000-1500 buxs.... that motor should take 700 no problem.... swap the pistons and rods for another 1k and your good for 1000 .... the 4l80 has to be built to take over 800

sounds like the iron block and 4l80 combo is going to suit your needs better. the iron block is a lot stronger especially with the amount of boost you are planning on running. also already coming with a built tranny is huge plus, but then again i guess it's all relative on how much you are getting the combos for.

) plus rebuild I could afford buying a built 4L80e from Monster which is rated for 1K Hp (just to be on the safe side, I don't want the tranny blowing up on me if suddenly I feel the urge to slam the throttle), but the problem would be a harness cause the ones at my junkyard already have some wires cut from where people remove sensors and connections. Any suggestions on a good aftermarket harness which I could use?

Either engine in a boosted application would be fine, larger cubic inch doesn't even really matter when your pushing the kind of cylinder pressure your talking about. You had better concentrate on transmission and rear end components at that point

Thanks for the advice, I just hope to find a good 6.0L at my junkyard. $286 for an engine with a 6 month warranty and with a guarantee that it's in running condition by turning it on right there in front of you is hard to beat.

I love it when people talk 1000+ HP and budget at the same time. Better be a big budget for sure.
For your performance levels iron block. If nothing else it gives you the option of L92 heads.
Drivetrain strength won't be a big issue if you stick with stock sized tires. you will need some serious rear traction to use that much HP.

Besides I'm not doing all at one time, I'm first swapping in the 6.0L and a stock 4L80E. Then from there I'll slowly build it up. I just don't want to end up buying something which I'll just end up throwing away or switching completely later on.
