Ls1 swap question
Hello everybody,
I want to install a short block ls1 which I can get from a friend into a 1970 nova. But my question is, What is the difference between a long block and a short block? Also can I use any transmission with the LS1? or is the a specific one I must use? such as a turbo 350 transmission from the nova. Also what else would be needed for an install?
I am sorry if these are stupid question, I have always had a love for cars but never knew a lot about them. I hope with project will give me a better grasp on these machines.

No prob-a long block is the assembled block, pistons, crank, cam and assm. heads. A short block is just minus the heads.
Don't know the answer to your trans question, but there are lots of guys running LSx 400/350 setups so I know it can be done.

I used a 4l60e out of the 95 z-28 I swapped into. Pretty much can use just about any GM tranny but don't get one from a v-6.
I had to buy an adapter and the LS1 flywheel. Do some searches on here and you'll find tons of info.

You will need the flexplate spacer/longer bolts to run a th350, I have a 5.3/th350 in my mustang and that's what I did. Summit sells the parts, spacer is like 30 and each bolt is 6 bucks you'll need 5 I believe or 6. And I think u have to open the holes on some flex plates to make it line up, I got lucky and was given a flexplate that already lined up perfect.

We have a th350 in our 71 Nova which we mainly use at the track. We kept it since OD was not a requirement and we already had the TH350 with a transbrake and ATI Converter. For the conversion we sell a kit that includes an SFI Flywheel, Hub Spacer and Flexible Stainless Dipstick, since most of the time the TH350 dipstick wont work with an LS1 Swap.
If you are going to do a lot of street driving, I would recommend the 4L60E as mentioned above.
