Either its a wiring problem or a bad gauge. New sensor would usually fix it but since he did that already. The gauge is run directly off of the sensor on 98 only. It is not a usual problem, I've done several of these swaps with no issues.

Depends on sensor. If he put the correct 3 wire 98 sensor in the head & plugged it into a 98 PCM & 98 harness that is still properly connected to gauge, it should work. If he used the wrong sensor (the 6.0L sensor; 2 wire) or used the 6.0 harness, there is no output to the gauge. The sensor must be the 98 style 3 wire sensor w/ 98 harness.

GM Part 12551708 should be factory installed in that car, and it shouldve been installed in that 6.0l when it was put in the car.
Exactly..the 408 in my MCSS and the LS1 in my S10 are functioning with the Gauges I have installed in them vehicles no problem. GM Sensor 12551708, 1995 Z28 Gauges in the MCSS, and stock 1991 Gauges in the S10.

ok well i bought another water temp sensor for 98 TA and they gave me a two prong....looked at car and it has three prong....i can buy the sensor with two prong wire that comes with it if that makes a difference....just to make sure im looking at the right thing its on the front of driver side head right? and as far as the gauge being bad a symbol is on saying something is up with the water temp so idk if thats a sign that the guage is fine or not

ok im confused i had the dealer look up 12551708 and it was a 3 prong sensor but then i had him look up the part number for one for a 98 T/A specifically and the three prong sensor for it had a code of 10096181.....idk what the difference is but i need to know cuz i dont want to get the wrong one cuz they are both $30 each.....another thing: the gauge does not flicker when you plug or unplug connector and it just sits at like 165 or 170 all the time so it kinda leads me to believe there is either no current or the gauge is bad or something...im borrowing a voltage meter tomorrow to check that but if anyone has any thoughts i would appreciate it
