lsx swap questions.
i had a few questions about swapping a lsx in my camaro. i work at an auto wrecker and i can get my hands on a motor, trans pcm and harness but they are from trucks we dont have any ls1 cars come in. my question is dose it matter if i get a motor thats drive by wire and swap it to drive by cable and use a harness from DBC? i also was reading some where there are 2 style or colored crank senors i gotta watch for when it comes to picking the harness for the swap or it dosent matter what style crank senor to go with it, i know the reloctor wheel on the cranks are different im planning on geting a 5.3 or 6.0 what would be the best year engine to get?
i can use all the help i get and been reading up on the swap so it looks pretty simple to have done.
thanks

The easies thing to do would be to get the harness, pcm, and engine out of the same vehicle. You can use DBW without any problems, Just try to get the pedal and TAC out of the same vehicle as the other parts. I am putting a 03 4.8 DBW in my Chevelle and am gonna start the swap this week.

As stated you can go either way. There is absolutely no issue buying a DBW engine and making it drive by cable as long as it is a 24x engine (pre 2007 truck). The crank sensor question you have is to determine if the engine uses a 24x or 58x crank reluctor. All 58x engines are DBW, 24x engines could be either DBW or DBC depending on year/application. My advice would be to buy a 6.0 with the lowest miles and the best price. Then go from there.

i talked to my boss today at work about 5.3 and 6.0 and its was only 100 differentance with my discount so i say 400 bucks for a complete 6.0l engine is good by me also, should i get a 4l60e or 4l80e and i do need to do anything differently with a 4l80e to make it work with wiring and can i run it off the same ecu or dose it need its own ecu i cant remember if i rear some where that it needed its own ecu or not. now the motor i may be getting is 6.0l out of a 2005 2500 chevy with dbc or out of a 2006 cube van with dbc which is the one with the 4l80trans.

Yes if you can get everything from the same vehicle, it will work and be easier. The 4L80e is better. If you start mismatching it can still work, but you have to do minor mods to the wiring and tuning. Yes you can get that wiring to work. Just click on the thread in my sig!

If you are going to race the car, get the 4L80E. If you are going to drive it a lot and not make a ton of horsepower, go with the 4L60E. You would be amazed at how much power that 4L80E robs. If you dont need the strength, dont use it. Regarding the harness, I would NOT get the cube van harness. Here is why.....It is a Green/Blue PCM with DBC. This is a rare application. You might find it easier to just go with a Red/Blue PCM DBC application (Camaro/Firebird/99-03 Truck) and repin for the 4L80E. Then just use a red/blue PCM with an Operating System from a 4L80E truck. Just my opinion.

the car is goin to be a driver not a racer i just figure with a 6.0l the 4l80 is the way to go, i already have 2 engine harness from from one is out of a 99 pick up and the other is from a 2002 pick both having red and blue connectors. ok now i been thinking cause im trying to do this on a budget i was thinking if i could use my 700r4 that has been rebuilt with a shift kit and some vette parts nothing crazy. i know i would need to hook the tv kick down cable to the throttle which isnt a be deal i seen kits to make them work, now dose the ls pcm need to have a vss coming from the trans or dose it run off the maf and iac? thats one thing i havnt seen when it came to using a 700r4. i just wanna see what my opions are cause i plan to get the big parts in the next week or so.

I just did a VSS thread over @:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=506682
You can run any of the old transmissions without the VSS, BUT...... people have said that you can have stalling issues and random high idle at a stop. Some people have claimed to have no problem. So i guess its just a trial and find-out kind of situation. The PCM just needs to know if the vehicle is moving. I believe it has to do with the signal to the Idle control, but don't quote me on that. There are a few ways to approach this depending on your setup. Whether you have cable driven speedo or already have a VSS on the back of your 700r4 for a different vehicle.

If you must use the 700R4, you could always put a 4L60E reluctor wheel in place of the speedo gear (the output shafts are the same size). Also, if you go the 700R4 route, you would program the PCM for a manual transmission.

Later 700r4s came with speed sensor. Some are gear driven and some have reluctor on tailshaft. If you get and early one you can get a gear driven sensor out of later 700 and it will work. You may have to calibrate PCM for that sensor but not sure about that part.

700R4s will have a mechanical Speedo output (just like a th350 or th400). 4L60s (non E) will have a reluctor wheel. If you are going to use a 4L60E reluctor wheel it would be 40 tooth so you would have to program the PCM for a manual transmission with a 40 Tooth reluctor.

I wish I could find a 6.0l for $400....
Here is some info on running a 4L80E..if you decide to go that route..
1998 and back have two Speed Sensors on the Transmission, 1999-up have the Input on the Trans and the Output on the Rear Diff of the vehicle. To run a 4L80E in that car you would have to re-build it with the Rear Drum that has the Reluctor Wheel on it for the Output VSS, or put a VSS on the Rear Diff.
Suttle differences that'll **** ya off..
Since you are goin 700R4 you will need to use that 6.0l Flexplate, Spacer & Bolts to correctly bolt up the 700R4. You will have to notch 3 of the holes on the Flexplate to correctly run that smaller Convertor.
This is the one that I use to run my TH350 behind my 408..

yea i got the 6.0 motor from work and with my discount it was 400 but for any one else they range 800 and up, i also grabbed a core 6.0 for 150 bucks complete as well from work i think it had a slight knock in it so that would be a rebuilder later down the road and when thats ready ill swap the 6.0 out and maybe do a 6.0 swap in my 97 tahoe down the road. im almost starting to think i should just grab a 4l60e instead, i was looking into the 700r4 swap and the kick down cable is whats getting to me the only place i can seem to find one is from bowtie over drive but there kit is like 160 bucks and spacer with longer bolts i got a price from my old work at the gm dealer and the parts manger told it the spacer its self is 70 bucks and i didnt get a price on the bolts tho but im sure they are up there in price and i still need to get some source of vss to the pcm and they range from 50 and up so all in all im looking at almost 400 bucks in lil extras to have this 700r4 install which i can probley get a 4l60e for 200 from work so which now that i think about it i think that ll be the best way of doing it and just sale my 700r4 and use that funds for the new transmission. as for the 4l80e i dont think ill be needing something the big and seems like a lot of work, this car will be a daily driver in the summer time and wont have a crazy amount of hp so ill just settle for the 4l60e and call it a day lol.
