Default 2nd gen fbody, which t56?

Hi, I'm on the hunt for an LS/t56 pull out. I was looking at at GTO and CTSV pull out, but from reading on here it appears the trans shifter is much farther back on these than the earlier Fbody pull outs. Any advice? Can I use the GTO or CTSV? Would the shifter be too far back and uncomfortable? Thanks for any advice. I want to get it right before making a large purchase.

Pretty sure you can use an f body shifter on a gto t56, but not on the ctsv's.

The easiest T56s to swap into older cars are the F-body and the Magnum T56, followed by the GTO T56 (but it has the 2.97 1st gear set).

The F-body T56s are getting pretty hard to find, since the newest of those cars is going on 13 years old. So if the budget allows it, get the Magnum and call it a day.

Im. Overly wondering if either will work as a direct bolt in. From another thread the bell housing to shifter location is 4" longer on the GTO then the fbody.

If you had a gto t56 I would trade you my f body t56. I would rather have the lower gears for my heavy car.

Just take the shifter out of the GTO trans and stick in a F-body shifter. No problems. Or better yet, buy an aftermarket F-body shifter.

I chopped my GTO shifter in 2 pieces and mounted the one section on the inspection cover near the bellhousing. Then I increased the length of the linkage. Works great.

I'm still digging through some threads so bare with me while i resurrect this one.

Looking to put a T56 in my 78 T/A. Most likely it will be one from a GTO but I may be able to get my hands on an Fbody one.

Question, currently i have a 4speed console (brand new). Id like to utilize that shifter location if possible (farther forward). Do any of you have any photos of your swaps in a 2nd gen using the factory 4speed hole? I'm wondering if i will need to mount the shifter on the forward plate?

Thanks in advance guys

See how far to the rear of the block/bellhousing split the shifter is. You will have your answer.

Thanks for the reply G Atsma. I cant argue that as I do agree with you. I suppose its safe to say the LS will sit virtually in the same location as the SBC.

This will be true if you use the Holley f-body swap components...no guarantee with other swap parts.
