f body oil pan onto a 5.3
Hello all,
Does anyone have a link to a write up with pictures of swapping an f-body oil pan onto a 5.3. I've got the pan, windage tray, dipstick tube and dispstick. The engine is going to be hanging from an engine lift, so I'd like to be able to know where all the bolts should be and where they should go ahead of time. I haven't found anything yet that shows the whole process.
Thanks,
Brandon

It bolts on exactly the same way ALL LS oil pans bolt on. Just a different sump shape and dipstick. Unless you are talking about whole process of bolting any of these on...
One thing is to put all the bolts in loosely and use a straightedge to make sure the rear surface is even with the rear block surface, and use a dab of RTV on the corners

All LS series oil pans are interchangeable, u have only to cut 5.3 windage tray when installing f-body oil pan on 4.8 5.3 or 6.0 it wil hit the pickup tube
easy here few pictures done by members of ls1tech
also see 70TWO NOVA how he done this

Thanks for the info guys. I should have been more clear and stated that I am replacing the windage tray and pan I have (original 5.3) and replacing them with a f body windage tray and pan. I was curious to know if the windage tray bolted up in the same mounting locations. So to make sure I understand, the sump will bolt up the exact same way, it's just that the tube is a different shape? The tips about the straight edge and rtv and very helpful, thanks.

Once you see where the pickup tube and dipstick have to go, the windage tray should locate itself, and bolt down in a similar fashion as the original one.

a couple other tips i would mention would be to be careful with the o-ring and bolt for the pickup tube. i got a small cut on the o-ring somehow and caused some oil pressure issues...pita.... maybe a little oil or vaseline on it would have prevented that...another time i had the pickup bolt head snap off when installing (new bolt and didn't overtighten) not sure what happened but that was fun extracting.

Would you recommend a new o-ring for the pickup tube? I bought this oil pan that was taken off of a crate engine that someone was parting out on ebay.
Also, is there a gasket other than the o ring that goes under the pickup tube I should purchase. I seem to see pictures of what looks like a paper gasket (or a flast gasket) but I can't find it mentioned anywhere on parts websites.
Thanks,

Thanks, I appreciate it.
The pan didn't come with the oil cooler blockoff plate. I'm trying to find this on the autozone website, but I can't come up with anything. Is this not available through the parts stores? I've tried every search term I can think of.
