Default Moved Alternator - Need Custom Length Serpentine Belt

I moved my alternator from the stock Vette eye-sore location to the spot where the A/C compressor was. Now I need a 77" total length belt to complete the package. I never had the stock belt, so I'm not sure how long it was. I'm wondering if any of you know of a set-up that uses about a 77" belt (F-body, GTO, CTS-V, Trucks...or even the Vettes)?

Or is there a place to order custom length belts? Just though I'd ask here before I take the tape measure to the parts store...

Just tell the auto store how long. The length is generally included in the part number

Default Serpentine belts

I ran into a similar problem when I relocated the AC comp on my LT1/280Z. Here is what I did:
I ran a length of header wrap (only thing I had that was long enough, a string would work) around all the pulleys where the belt would be & marked it w/ a pen where it overlapped. I ended up needing a really long belt, like 103.5".

The trick to decoding belt Gates (others are similar) part numbers is that for a 6 groove belt 103.5" long, the closest Gates # would be K061037, which is 103.74" long.

The stock belt on an LT1 is a K060642, meaning it is a 6 grove (K06) 64.2" long belt (0642).

Here is a link to the Gates website, look around & I'm sure you can find what you need.

I`m gonna need a shorter length one too, I`m not running the AC or power steering pumps, and am fitting an SLP underdrive pulley.
Might be able to source one in the UK, but if not, where`s the best place to get one ?

These belts are not unique for cars, they are used everywhere.

I would look in the Yellow Pages under rubber.

I found this one as one example.

I was wondering how I was going to figure out what belt to buy when I add my A/C compressor. If I walked into the parts store and just asked for a belt by length I figured they would tell me thats impossible that they need an application . But now I don`t have to, well I probably will anyway just to see if they have a clue

G-Body,
I owed you one for the wiring diagrams. Glad this was helpful.

The Gates website will also cross a part # to show what vehicles it fits in the event you need to go that route.

So I got my 77" belt and it was too short (barely). So FYI when you measure with a string you may need to tack on 1/2"-1" or so. That's OK cause now I know exactly how to find the size I need. Thanks again.

Goodyear belts are very similar also. example 775k6 = 77.5 inches long six ribs wide. If you can't find what you need in a Gates try a Goodyear. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but my Goodyear belt gives my engine a blower whine type of noise.

Pete,

I got mine from Medway Power Transmission in Ashford, Kent. Very helpfull on the phone as well.

www.medwaypt.co.uk

My set up (cut out from a 2000 Camaro, minus PS, A/C) ended up as a 6 rib 52.4" long, K section 3.56mm pitch # 1330K06 cost £24 incl postage.

Cheers

Jim

All the part numbers work the same, Gates, Dayco, Napa, etc....length and how many ribs is pretty much always somewhere in the part number, in some form or fashion.

I was wondering if anyone might be interested in that. I'll have to take some pics when the camera turns up. For now I grabbed a few with the camera on my phone.

Here's a quick description:

1) Remove compressor and compressor bracket.
2) Remove idler and tensioner pulleys from bracket including the tensioner arm.
3) Drill and tap the tensioner arm bolt hole to 10-1.5
4) Remove semicircle shoulder material on the pass-side of the tapped hole
5) Make a straight bracket from 3/16 flat stock with a single hole on one end and a slot on the other
6) Chop off the alternator portion of the alt/ps bracket

On thing you can't see very well in the pics is that I welded about a 1/2" long piece of tubing on the single hole end of the straight steel bracket. This tube fits over the pulley shoulder and sets the correct geometry for the bracket.

I also turned the water neck 180 for now. I'll be buying a straight one from S&P.

I can take more pics with a good camera next time I have it apart if anyone is interested.

Default More belt info

I tried measuring with string, but the belt ended up a couple inches short. I found it much easier to measure with a 1/2" wide tape measure. I attached a pic.

Summitt sells goodyear belts and they have the lengths listed right on the website. If you click on the belt you need and then click on the application tab you can find out what the original applications were, which helps out greatly when you try to go to autozone and buy the belt. Summitt belts

Heres a link to goodyear belts. http://www.goodyearbeltsandhose.com/...tCarSearch.jsp They allow you to search by part number. Heres a breakdown of their system P/N 4061140 the 406 is the base for 6 rib serpentine belts. 1140 is the length, 114.0". If you type 406114 into their P/N search box you will bring up all belts that range from 114.0"-114.9"

I tried the string, too and the problem is the string stretches. The tape measure is a good idea.

I just took the length to the local parts store and we looked it up in their book. The book had the lengths listed so it was pretty easy.

I just wanted to say thank you to everybody that put info into this thread. This is the kind of stuff I love to rear about and learn on ls1tech. If I ever need a custom belt length this makes it very easy to go about doing so thanks again!

Digging up an old thread to say thanks. I am using only an alternator (electric water pump) and I was dreading trying to find the right belt. Using the information above, I have confirmed that Gates has belts short enough for what I will need. Now, I just need to go buy some brackets.

Thanks again,
Ken
