Default What Generation Motor??

I've seen alot of post about Gen I II and IV motors. If you have a 2006 model year LQ-4, LQ-9 with 317 heads is that a Gen IV motor?

Also why do people use the term "LSX" motor for about everything they have. I though the LSX series motors are the GM high performance iron blocks for street and hard core racing use. Are aluminum block motors also LSX?? Thanks

i think all ls-based motors in general are refered to as LSx motor (ls1,ls2,ls3,lq4,lq9,and so on) gen III on a lq4 motor.

01 5.3L is a Gen III LM3

Someone can correct me but I think Gen IV engines have the cam sensor in the front for a quick telltale sign.

LSx is the GMPP block but is used as a general LS based engine name.

Yep - that term was already in common use (as a way to refer to this series of engines) by the time that the GM high-perf block came out...

Gen IV refers to the LSx motors with the newer style heads like the L92, L76, LS3/7/9. The heads will still fit on the Gen III LSx engines but you have to use a compatable intake as well and so far there aren't any aftermarket intakes available.

Working in the IT and Technical world.. the miss used of the "LS1" and "LSx" word or terms has always been a sore spot with me.. I have always used the correct "Gen III" or "Gen IV" and code of engines when referring to the a specific engine.

These three charcter "LS1", has been the most miss used word for all of the Gen III/IV engines.. I gave up trying to correct people with their miss used of the word and term when referring to the class and generation of engines.. I beleive that this has cause a lot of confussion when trying to learn and cross reference parts for mixing and matching.

This makes swapping and using of part more harder that it really needs to be! Miss using the words and term just goes to show how little knowledge and experience that some people really have.

We all make mistakes.. but learn from it.. This is what Hot Rodding is about !

But this is just my option... and venting.. LOL...
