Sorry to be the new guy bumping an old thread, but does anyone know if this dood is still a member here or know if he ever finished the car? I have a 1978 Ford Mustang (The Pinto's big brother). I have been considering doing a 5.3L Truck LS / 4L60 swap in my Mustang. The 300HP 302 H.O with a 100 shot of nitrous historically tends to last about 6 months. LOL The C4 3 speed auto tends to last about a year. I want an overdrive auto, and the Ford AOD is a piece of wood. So I was thinking a 5.3L is 325 HP ($500) + a comp cam and beehive spings = over 400 hp and a bolt on 4L60 (an overdrive transmission that is not a piece of sheot) would be a nice combo for the Pinto-Stang

If you're hurting a 302 with a little 100 shot inside 6 months, you're doing it wrong. I've sprayed many stock ones anywhere from 100-225 hp plate kits with no problems.

Many people have, that's why they stopped making them. in a rearend crash they kept blowing up because of the gas tank location.

Defending Pinto's on a GM forum is kinda pointless, but anyway here goes. LOL

Early Pinto's blew up when you rear ended them because the hard line, fuel line would cause a spark when it snapped in a rear-end crash. Ford corrected the problem with two hose clams and 3" of Neoprene fuel line. They decided not to recall the effected cars because the fix cost $1.15 + labour to fix and they had sold millions of Pinto's. Most small RWD cars in the 70's will also blow up in a rear end crash, Ralph Nader pointed the finger at the best selling subcompact car (The Pinto) because it would pontentially hurt the largest number of people.

So buy a 74 (or later) Pinto or buy a 3" piece of Neopreme fuel line and two clamps.....or better yet put a fuel cell in it. (Like mine has)

302's blowing up in Mustang II's and Pinto's has a more complicated side also. The SBF is a hard engine to keep cool. A Pinto /Mustang II has a really small rad and really small grill. The tiny frontal area compounds the cooling issues. A Mustang II specific bellhousing and factory 10"!! torque convertor have the same effect on the C4's transmission life expectancy. The SBF in stock form in a Mustang II, has no issues, but it is also 139HP So if you have a 400HP fox Mustang, the issues I am having don't effect you.

Beyond the fact making power with an LS is as hard as falling off a log, the LS has much better cooling then a SBF. The 700R4 / 4L60 is a far better transmision then a AOD. (In stock form).

I have seen Ford Mod motors in Mustang II's but they are far more expensive, complicated and physically very large for the tiny Mustang II engine compartment.

P.S The owner on this car now has twin turbo's on it! I don't speak 1/8 mile but I converted his time to be in the 8.80's in the quartermile LOL. He answered all my swap questions.

The car was finished. It's ran a best time of 8.02 @176 and last weekend it went 5.14. I can't remember the mph. It belongs to my brother now and he is the one that finished it.

Here is another thread with some info and pics
https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...lsx-pinto.html

and here are some videos. He did the 8.02 on drag week.

Hey other brother, did you get the Corvette engine mounts from the dealer? Do you have any pics of your engine mounts? What vehicle is the front accessory drive off of? Thanks Jason
