Dep on model: 5x4.75 bolt pattern 0 to -16 offset.

Mine has 15"x7"w at 0 offset stockers but I think ZQ8 wheels (16x8) have a -16 offset

Perfect, thanks. I can work with that.

The picture's a replica of a Lotus 7 - the 11 has full bodywork. No plans to stuff a big engine in it, it does pretty well with what it's got and I like the light weight. It'll outrun a supercharged Atom But I was talking with someone today about the possibility of building a Westfield with the LS...

A couple more questions. The Miata front end is 59" from face to face, so the 58.375" 4WD S10 rear would be perfect.

My 1998 Camaro has a 7 5/8" R&P, right?

If I want a 58" rear axle with disc brakes and 28 spline axles, I should be able to get one from a 1998 or later 4wd S10 Blazer but not the ZR2. Correct? Car-Part shows a yard in Denver with about a dozen of them. I just want to make sure I'm looking at the correct parts before I make the trip over the mountains to dig one up.

I might be wrong but I believe that the 4wd rear is 64" wheel flange to wheel flange. I think it is the 2wd one that is 59" one. Like I said, I could be wrong just double check. But yes, the 98 up 2wd rear has the same 28 spline axle that will work with your center section from the camaro. All of the 4wd rears had 28 spline already. 84-97 2wd rears had 26 spline axles.

Yes.

Im not sure what the axles measure wms to wms but I know you dont want a zr2, they have an even wider track width than a normal 4wd s10 IIRC.

A member of the Grassroots Motorsports forum measured his 2WD axle as 54" from WMS to WMS for me. I've come across the same measurements elsewhere, which would put the 4WD version at 58".

All 4WD rears are 28 spline? Good info.

I ran into it when I tried to put a 4wd posi unit into my 94 2wd housing. The spline count was different then. Maybe 96 was the first year of the 28 spline. Like I said I could be wrong. Same with the width issue. I might have been measuring from a different point.

I've seen them as cheap as $150 1998 up with disc brakes no posi from the s10 warehouse on ebay. That would be perfect as you already have the posi and gears you need.

*Generally* if you get a non-zr2 4x4 unit, chances are its a G80 unit (28 spline gov-lock) and more than likely 3.42's

Subscribed.. I gotta see this one come to life. I just got done putting poly bushes in a 60 MGA and was wondering the same thing, how nice would an LS1 fit in there. Hey thats your old school Mini Cooper in the garage too, love those things.....

A suitable rear end is on the way to me now, I should have it Monday.

But in the meantime, here's my secret weapon!


It's a plastic engine replica from P-Ayr, via Summit. Makes life so much easier in my small garage when I can just lift this thing in and out. Besides, I can keep driving the Camaro this way! I'll sell it when I'm done. It has threaded inserts so I can bolt up headers, oil pan, water pump, the transmission, intake manifold, motor mounts - all to factory specs. I tried attaching a few bits and pieces to it and everything lines up perfectly.

Taa daaah!


The engine fits pretty well so far. With this location, I have the shifter in the factory spot. It's got the front pair of cylinders in front of the wheels with all the rest behind. I can't check hood clearance until I get a spare intake manifold, but there's one on the way. I do have room to drop the engine down a little bit more if I have to, and when I start cutting the firewall I'll have the option of moving it back. An inch or two wouldn't hurt. Other than chopping off the factory motor mounts, I haven't touched the engine bay yet. It actually looks as if this location is almost identical to the Miata one, relative to the wheels.

Ground clearance is currently fantastic. That pan would be approximately 6" off the ground in this position, so I can lower it if I have to.


I've also been playing with suspension. Looks as if the Miata suspension will go into the front fairly easily. I'll chop the frame rails off just aft of the firewall and rebuild them in a different shape so I can bolt the Miata subframe in place. The wider track will be dealt with by grafting on some flares from a Mk1 Rabbit/Golf.

The exhaust isn't going to be as tight as you think. In order to fit the Miata suspension, I'm going to basically support the fenders and hollow out the whole engine bay. The new frame arms will actually get wider as they go forward instead of narrower. A lot of V8 MGBs - including the factory ones - run the headers through the wheelwells, and I'll probably end up doing something similar. Cooling is likely to be a problem, and the extra escape route for the underhood air apparently helps a lot.

So far, I'm loving this foam engine. Highly recommended.

I looked through your posts on slowfastcar and it looks like you are making good progress. Interesting front suspension build. I never thought of building one side at a time. I guess I always work symetrically from the frame out. Looks good though! Post some pics here for the fellas!
