Dude you are a tool, seriously. What do you care if the guy wants to build this car his way? MOST swaps are not practical, however this engine platform makes it an ideal motors to put in almost anything. What do you care if the guy stays within his budget, just be cool and appreciate the time and effort this guy is putting into a project to build a car the way he wants. Go crawl back under your rock.

As far as this build goes, I cant wait to see the finished product

Man get off your high F'n horse go back to driving your benz, get yourself a starbucks and shut up and forget about it. Let this guy build his car. If he doesn't reach his goals so what its still a car, it may not be what you want, but it's rite for him. Thought this was a build thread not a pissing match.

I really hate when people come over from other forums and try and just keep going on a thread for absolutely no reason....really, this should have been a thread about how the car is going, not how its going to make the guy who made mercedes benz, j daimler roll over in his grave because one of his cars is going partially american. I think one of the reasons for the swap is that if something does break, it is easier and cheaper to fix and find parts for....as far as I have seen it, getting parts for mercedes are pretty expensive, and hard to come by for the older cars....lets get back on to the build

dear god.. theres more back and forth bull crap in this thread then any good details about the car OR the swap. The 6.0 is a DANG good motor, and will make one heck of a swap. As far as these long a$$ posts about nothing but trying to bash the OP and make yourself look like you know what your talking about,... well dear god! Grab your box of crayons, and go sit in the corner with the rest of your mb palls. And when your ready to graduate from kindergarten, grow up, and give the guy props for doing something interesting and ingenuitive, then you can talk.

cdk: keep up the good work man and post some up-dates! Bring this thing to life, do it under your budget, and spank the **** outa these hatin fools BACK ON TOPIC!

Wow ! After seeing all the hate, I had to go read the thread at Benzworld. I'm thinking they spend more time cleaning wine and cheese off their cars than actually doing anything with them. That guy wuffgator...his Father probably 'ed on his debutante ho's muff and their mutated child was thus conceived. Educating us about LS motors was really entertaining ! http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/index.php These guys are much cooler. My hat's off to you, Mr swapper !

The steering rack placement SHOULD be dictated by the steering knuckle (where the tie rods hook to) location, thus minimizing bump steer. Prolly have to change, modify the pan.

I see the SL 500 in 2003 got a steering rack instead of a box. I work on a few Benzs at my shop but nothing that new (2003). I'll assume that 03 was a complete body/platform change? If not then could be an almost direct bolt-in?

Quicky note: My Volvo runs 12.3s consistent with a H/C 346. Last fall at the drags at the line a guy in a suit and tie pulls up next to me with a new Benz. Not sure which model but looked bone stock and had a V12 logo on the side. Also his wife was riding with him. I turned 12.3 flat and he turned 12.2@ 115mph. Beat me by a tenth...Man that thing was fast!

Anywho...keep digging man nice job. Keeps the chin up

I'm definitely interested to see how this turns out - R129 is one of my favorite cars ever

I'm guessing the M120 is the 6.0 V12, right? Top of the line engine for the R129 (excluding the AMG models)

Can the stock rear end handle the LQ4's power? I'm assuming that since it's the V12 model, it probably has a beefier rear end than the regular SL. I'm curious as to how you're planning on doing that.

How are you doing the gauges?

Gauges will all be working stock, M120 = V12, I would assume that the stock rear will handle the power, although the top of the line ($131,000 in 1995) Mercedes doesn't come with a limited slip, and I don't think it is an option.

Mercedes cars typically have numerically lower gears, and this one is no exception with a 2.65 . I plan on swapping a 8.8 IRS diff in at some point.

I was thinking of this earlier today. My uncle has been trying to sell me his 97 SL500 for a while. It's nice to see someone making it work.

EDIT: Also to the OP you don't need anything close to a 60mm wastegate. That's something that people who make 1000+ horsepower use. You should be fine with something in the 38-40mm range. That should also save you money.

I gotta tell ya I worked on one of these before and it was very impressive. 7.3L stroker V12 and one of the best shifting auto trannies ever and all kinds of suspension and brake upgrades but its a rich man's toy at over 150K and that was when it was new back in 97. Comparing this car to anything we make in the US is just silly, there is just no comparison. The whole point of this build thread is to make stupid power on a budget, something that just can't be done with a regular MB so lets stick to the topic at hand please....

Great mechanical engineering (for the most part) but terrible electronic engineering. The Germans should outsource their electrical needs to the Japanese.
