I did clock the housing and weld it. If you need to just clock your housing, it can be done without welding. The housing can be rotated and the shoulders of the bolts will hold it in place. I will take a picture tomorrow.

ok, so you cut the bolt hole ears off, then welded it back together?

I cut the bolt ears off, and also cut and repositioned the hose outlet to a different angle. The welding is not needed if you just want to clock the housing. Take the bolts out of the housing and rotate it around, you will see what I mean. You don't have to cut the bolt ears off if you don't want to, but it will let you adjust it to more angles, and the part ears inside the housing that hold the actual thermostat keep it centered. You can use the stock bolts to fasten the housing down in neary any position because the shoulder of the bolt tightens down on the flange of the housing. Use washers for better bite.
This mod is for housings up to 04(I believe), not the housings that have replaceable thermostats. I did this on my Lincoln Mark VII LSC LS1 conversion I did 5 or 6 years ago, and no problems to date.

Why in the world did you use those ghetto assed 3 bolt header flange clamps instead of V-bands?

As a matter of fact there are some on my '84 Mustang. I say again... why? I mean, they will start to leak as soon as you crank it. They are in no way designed to cope with the backpressure of a turbo system. Your car is going to sound aweful. I've seen a ton of ghetto junkyard turbo setups with them, but you kinda expect them on cars like that. A build like yours I figured was worth the $80 that a pair of V-bands would cost.

If you look closely, and pay attention, the collector flanges will not be on the pressure side but the downpipe side. Pay attention

What a great thread!! Some folks are so adamant that their viewpoint is correct that they will NOT listen to reason, some are telling all to chill out, some are using logic and common sense in their arguments [generally a losing proposition :-)]. Perfect!!! We are having fun now!

FYI, I'm putting an LS6/4L60E into my '87 560SEC Mercedes. I get two and only two reactions from the MB crowd: 1. I'm the Anti-Christ and should be boiled in oil and 2. Fabulous - take lots of pictures because I want to do this too (and then want a ride when I get it done). The guys on Benzworld.org seem to generally appreciate my project, it's the guys in the local Mercedes Benz Club of America (MBCA) that are horrified. The MBCA here in Vegas is a nice group of folks but this is very much a social group, not a technical group so they don't have an understanding of the amazing amount of work it takes to do one of these swaps.

Kudos to the effort to put the LQ4 into the Benz and yes, I want a ride!

This thread was interesting at first, then I just realized I wasted a lot of my life reading it. Maybe we can delete 5 out of the 6 pages of this thread thus far and see how an LQ4 is really put into a mid 90's SL and we'll all be happy on LS1tech. For being a law student, that piece of trash really had nothing better to do than to register on here just to break *****. What trash...

Interesting build. Too bad about the clutter. Seems to happen a lot these days on builds.

On a side note there is another forum I post on that has **DO NOT POST** build threads. Any questions or comments go through PMs and the thread stays nice and to the point. Maybe that could happen here? Maybe not...

Can you tell me more about this swap? Did you use the stock rear differential and suspension? Do you have an issues with wheelhop? Did you have to modify the floor to fit the transmission?

Stock diff and suspension, although the 2.65 open diff that comes with the SL600 is nit the correct gear for the 4l80E. Wheelhop is not an issue at the present time. The floor had to be cut for the trans.

hey, thats a good idea. maybe the OP could click an option when creating the post that allows him to screen replies and approve them so the "cool build" or Why are you wasting your time doing that" replies will never make it on the post.. also may cut down on the retards that have to quote pics and make the post twice as large as it needs to be.

also could prevent people like us from hyjacking posts
