trying to find the park position on a 4l60

trying to find the park position on a 4l60 on 2001 ls1 with the 4l60 trans. trying to find the park position. if looking at the lever coming out the side of the trans. my lever comes out and goes down. does the bottom of the lever go toward the front of the the motor for the park position, or does it go the other way. the motor is no were ready to start. this has just been bugging me to know.
OK, I am now even more confused. 
So, if I am playing with the thing, it goes up, toward the engine side, or down towards the drive shaft. I always thought that as far as it could go counter clockwise (up and towards the engine) was park. Are we saying park is when it is all the way to the right, and pointing toward the driveshaft?
