I am in the process of putting my motor in. Does any one have any ideas how to put a mech temp gauge in?. I am thinking about boring the block heater out.Does anyone know the size of the block heater?Any pictures would be appreciated. Thanks Wes

There is a threaded hex head plug on the drivers side back of the block, above the oil filter.
I drilled out the center and tapped it for the sender on my 68, 3/8" NPT, I think.
I flattened 2 opposite sides of the plugs flange so I could tighten it.
BTW, the head temp sensor mount would not be deep enough for my sender. So check that before tapping.

What about the plug in the head passenger side rear? That is the spot the factory sensor is at on the other head I was thinking about using that if I ever added a mechanical Temp gauge, don't really need to though as I have a 98 which reads actual temp in the cluster

I used the passenger side head, it is the rear plug that I removed, I drilled and tap for 3/8" NPT for my water temp sender. There is not much more room for anything bigger at that location, I think some have tried, it just gets really close to the Manifold/header flange.
Some have used adapters, but this many also cause problems as it will then stick out away from the block and not flush.

I drilled out a block heater plug and tapped it with a 1/2" NPT to adapt a Datsun temp sensor to the engine. The 1/2 tap fit inside the octogon hole for the allen head just perfectly.
The plug that came on my crate motor was solid brass, which made it easier to work with. I bought a second plug at a GM dealer and it was some type of steel.
Hard to imagine a mechanical temp sensor fitting in that little 1/8" threaded hole.
