Default ls1 in a 96 tacoma

Hi guys. Not a terribly exciting project but im working on putting a camm'ed carb'ed ls1 in a 96 tacoma mini truck. Been working on this thing for a while but finally decided to go with an ls1. Picked up my block and heads tonight. Boy am I excited!

I'm planning on using this universal crossmember to mount the motor. Any opinions on this? I have noticed they say they are for straight front axles, but i have a crossmember under the radiator so i think there is enough frame rail support.

Aaron

Wow i didnt realize how much crap i had in my yard or my dining room until you posted pictures of it online. The auto cover on the pool looks sweet though.

I was just thinking the other day "I wonder if anyone has done an ls1 in a tacoma." Should be an awesome swap. I wouldn't go carb but thats just me, more for hood clearance reasons. I imagine the engine bay is sort of shallow.

I tried it several years ago with a 97 tacoma I had, it ended up being an absolute trainwreck. After a month of hacking it to pieces, I just put it back to stock, and stuck the motor in an rx-7. This was right around when the gto's came out, and I think had I known about the front sump pan it might have helped alot of the problems I was running into. The steering rack was causing all sorts of problems, I couldn't get the motor close to setting low enough to make the trans fit without hacking up the tunnel. I would def think you would need more than that tying the framerails together, and keep in mind you rack bolts to it. The driverside header will be fun with the steering shaft as well. If you pull it off, I think you will be the first, hopefully you will have better luck than I did. You might search under my name, there may be some old post of it, probably around 04 or so.

Why carb'd? Why not injected? I have been debating on doing a 5.7 Toyota engine from a full size truck and putting it in my brothers '06 Tacoma. I think it would be nasty. And sticking with Toyoat parts should make things a smoother install for the electronics part of it.

HAHAHAHA There's so much **** in my dining room (i'm keeping Aaron the OP's engine and truck at my house)

He wants to go carb becuase my engine is carb'd and he's felt the rediculous power it makes :-D My carb setup is very streetable, not bad on fuel (around 20mpg), makes great power, plus i already have a carb for him and plenty of tuning experience on them. And carb setup LS1s look 1,000 times better than the stock LS1 intake EFI setup. If i went EFI i would def run the Victor JR manifold they are just so much cleaner and more efficient.

Its the HD version from the ls4.

I want to go carbed because in my mind is simpler/easier/and i like the look of a carb sticking out of the hood. This truck is about as far from a dd as you can get so i dont really care about mpg or ultimate streetability

Yeah it's not in a garage either that's my dining room (notice the hardwood floor)

I'll sell you that 4T65e-HD for $300, has 12k on it.

Set the engine in the truck tonight to see how everything clears with the oilpan etc. Hopefully if i get some time i will be able to weld the mounts in this weekend, and get it finally set! Looks like everything is going to fit okay. Maybe some problems with the steering linkage, but i can probably find some headers to clear that.

Block in!

Head on, brake booster clearance.

Side shot.

Hood height/Intake clearance. I will have to put a cowl in the hood because the intake setup sits 12" over the lifter valley.

GTO front sump oil pan. Its not bolted to the block but you get the general idea.

He cut the trans tunnel out yesterday. I think hes going to try to weld the mounts in today or sometime this week.
