Default LS1 A/C compressor with vintage air...

Hey guys,

I'm researching LS1 swaps in vintage muscle. I've heard the LS1 A/C compressor isn't capatable with vintage air's A/C kit. I've been told to do this, I'd have to change compressors.

I'm planning on putting an LS1 in a 68 camaro with vintage air. I'm planning on using the the stock LS1 accessory drive. Which means I'll have to notch the frame rail for the stock A/C compressor. But before I do this, I'm checking to see if any body has done this.(which I'm sure they have) I'm just trying to catch some snaggs before it happens...

I know there is a refrigerant out there that is supposedly compatible with the older R12 systems and the newer R134a systems. Its called R12a, and one source of it is a company called Red Tek.

You might be able to use a modern compressor with the vintage systems if using R12a.

Here is their website.

http://www.redtek.com/index.html#

Check it out and see if its an easier option.

They make a kit for 67-69 camaro, nova, etc for 600 that uses the factory LS1 compressor. I just put one in a 67 Nova. Cheap and works great!!!!!!!!

Why exactly can't R134a refrigerant be used in a 12R refrigerant system? Specifics please.

I think he is talking about the brand Vintage Air which I'm sure uses the newer refrigerants. Their systems were not compatable with the style of AC compressor that GM uses. Now if Southern Air makes a system that uses the stock compressor I'm going to check it out.

They operate at different pressures.

Actually if you go the website I provided, you would read this....
"RED TEK® 12a, a HC-based refrigerant from Thermofluid Technologies, is a blend of environmentally safe hydrocarbon fluids designed as a direct replacement and retrofit refrigerant option for replacing R134a and R12 refrigerants in automotive air conditioning and refrigeration systems. 12a operates at lower head pressures and offers improved cooling properties and performance verses R134a and R12."

Go to the site, and do some reading there. I am going to try this stuff in my 87 Olds with a modern (134a) compressor with the factory system (R12) and see what happens.

This stuff may be "environmentally safe" but is not safe. It is a hydrocarbon based refrigerant and will burn or explode under the right conditions. I know of no knowledgeable A/C tech that would even consider using this stuff, it is just too unsafe. Most of these types of refrigerants are a mixture of butane and propane! There are plenty of alternatives for R12 systems without resorting to blowing yourself up.

is there a kit that will work with the ls engine in a 1st gen camaro where you don't have to cut the subframe? Reason is mine's already powdercoated and don't wanna mess that up. maybe one that will put the compessor up high on passenger side?
