8.8" IRS in something other than a Miata?
I'm wondering if anybody has used an 8.8" IRS in something other than a Miata, making their own brackets and whatnot. Pictures would be great. Also, what is the 8.8" differential in stock? I assume the 5.0 Thunderbird, but what else? Eventually I would like to go to IRS in my 65 mustang, after the 5.3L/T56 swap is done. (Basically just need to find the time at this point) Thanks!

^+1 But i snapped a half shaft with drs and 450/500 to the wheels. I bought dss level 5 axles and cracked the differential case even with a brace on it. I now have a solid axle. 03-04 cobra irs is 31 splines the others are 28. There are still some stock irs cobras in the 10s. Mine didnt do so well.
Oh and i parted mine out.

So they only come in the Cobras? Before my thread I was searching and found several people saying "they are a bunch of them in the junkyards" but if they are only out of the cobras that can't be true. What is the average price? Thanks all!

Exploders are solid axle 8.8" and the newer ones come with disc brakes...no IRS except for the newest model and that thing is HUGE.

Yea newer expeditions, vettes, jags idk which one would work for you though. I would say around 1000 used and to shorten the them would be a pita and almost un doable the way its designed. You would have to make new ca's, shorten the shafts, and tire rods. But it does bolt up to mustang ca mounts. Im not sure if the older ones are the same.

if I can make it fit under a Honda S2000 without cutting just making brakets and had cusom axels and hubs made by the DriveshaftShop then it should fit under a 65 mustang and I found mine for 800 plus 1400.00 for driveshaft, axels and hubs. Should hold 600hp for my setup

On the other hand, an '03-up Cobra weighs over 4000 pounds with driver and fuel, while the '65s were around 2600# for a 289, 4-speed car with no driver. That'll make a huge difference in the stresses. The Cobras used an aluminum housing, while I believe the T-birds were iron, heavier but stronger. The aftermarket is full of both 31 and 33-spline limited slips, but 33s may create issues with needing new stub axles to the CV joints. Hennessee's vipers are running close to 1000 hp with those diffs, modified Dana 44s, and the aftermarket is also full of Ford 9"-based centers for IRS, though most of it is 'vette-oriented. BMW offers a good, but rare, alternative in the 8-series, particularly the V-12-powered 850i.
