Hey Crosstraining, I see you used the short/narrow frame stands. Are those the 69 camaro 302 z28 stands? If so, do you have the part # of the motor mounts you used? I am also having alignment problems and am trying to find a cheap fix rather than selling my oil pan.
thanks

billsnogo did you see the shims he put between the frame and the frame stands? That may be what you need for yours to drop in.

I think the stands are the originals that came with the 350 engine. I will check and see what part # for the mouter mounts I have. I did end up using some shims. That definately helped, but it then changed where the stands lined up to the mounts. I ended up knocking out the tube inside the stands and boring out the holes quite a bit. It seems like it will work right now. My engine may sit a little higher than some of the other guys on here because of the shims???

mini upate:
I can NOT weld. I spent most of today trying to weld up my trans crossmember. it was my first attempt at welding. it did not go so well. So, I will be marking and clamping it together to get someone else to weld it up. I am sure it was a combination of me and the cheap Harbour Freight mig welder I bought, well more like mostly me. I will keep practising, but I need to keep moving along.
Here is a pic of a cheap alternator I got to see if it fits. It is much smaller, and a perfect fit. It has a different plug than my old one, so I will have to work on that.

If you were nearby I'd help with the welding. I'm guessing your HF welder is running fluxcore? A lot of beginners have a hard time getting fluxcore to weld well. Running a CO2/Argon mix with solidcore wire will help a lot. I recommend practicing without pulling the trigger at all... just try to get a slow steady movement and keep the gun the same distance from the workpiece and perpendicular to the joint. After you practice just going in a straight line, you can start adding a small circular pattern. Focussing on the distance, the perpendicularity, and the steady movement will help a ton. Its also important that your joints are clean (ground or flapper-wheeled) and tight (no gaps). Practice makes perfect!

Not sure about start up. Still need fuel system set up, exhaust, rad hoses, finish wiring, and I'm sure a bunch of other stuff. Getting closer though.

Does it look like the exhaust will fit below the crossmember? I want to do a similar one, but would need to have two large box sections that would allow the exhaust to pass through.

I think it is going to be OK. It does not hang down very low.

Good to know. I have never bought anything but sheetmetal and ignored the rest, so I must ask; were you able to buy the box steel by the foot? How about the plate steel?

There is a place here in Fort Wayne that sells it by the pound. They have about anything. It is very reasonable, but I got lucky with the crossmember. The guy that has been helping me gave me a length of plate and box that I cut up, and then had him weld it. (after my welds sucked)

i ended up cutting my x-member and welding boxed tubing into it (gusseted, of course!) for exhaust clearance. i'm going to do the same for my rear suspension x-member, just haven't gotten around to it. of course, 3" tubing hangs a little lower and makes things a tad more difficult.

I love projects such as these and can't wait to see it all finished up. What a great car and project to cut your teeth on and the feeling you are going to have when it's all finished will be second to none.

Thanks for keeping us updated!
