5.3 with a muncie 4spd?
Anyone done this? I`m thinking of going with a carbed 5.3 truck engine in my 65 el camino but I want to leave my 4spd for now untill I can afford to swap to a T56 or Tremec 5spd.

Do a search for the LS1 engine kit installation guide or buy it from GM. PN88959384. This info is from it:
Use the Early BBC 4speed bell that will take a 168 tooth flywheel. With this, use the PN 12557583 pilot bearing and PN 12561680 flywheel.
Note: The munci bell has to be from a big block chevy... the small block one will not accept the larger flywheel. (Keisler sells them new)
Note2, the flywheel that GMPP lists is a special adapter flywheel. It is .400 thicker to the face than a standard LS flywheel. This will make the clutch / throw out bearing gemoetry correct.

Thanks Dan. I have no idea what bell housing I have on there now but most likley it`s a sbc one and could probably use a good aftermarket unit anyway.

I'm using a Richmond behind mine. Same input shaft size as Muncie. I'm using the LS1 flywheel/clutch/plate, 621 BBC bell housing (with extra bolt hole from Keisler). Pilot bearing from LS7.
If your Muncie is 10 spline, you just need to swap out the disc.
A longer throwout bearing provided better geometry for the mechanical linkage.

Are you nuts? The beauty of these new setups are the transmissions and the injection. Although that would be a solid bare bones setup without all the normal GEN I problems. Give Mcleod clutches a call. They had all the parts to convert an LT1 T56 to a GEN I externally balanced motor and still retain a GEN I scattershield and manual clutch linkage with a twin disc and aluminum fly none the less! I couldn't find most of it until I talked to them. They probably have what you need.

You should be able to swap all of your gen I stuff over to the gen III, minus the flywheel of course. I have a 6.0 with the same bellhousing and clutch that I used on my gen I 350. I had to open up the bolt holes for the pressure plate but everthing else works. I currently have a tremec 5 speed so the clutch disk is different, but I ran the same bellhousing with my muncie. I mocked everything up prior to install and the pilot shaft only sets in the pilot shaft bushing enough to keep the pilot shaft from walking around, which is all you need. When I installed the pilot shaft bushing in the tail of the crank I let it set out a smidge instead of sending it all the way home. I have run my car like this for well over a year with no problems.

Please further define "trouble". I'm guessing that you are running the .4" crank spacer with a standard width flywheel, and you can't get the starter teeth to engage? Well, I'm sure there are many ways to solve this. I went the cheapest route possible and bolted a 4L60E flexplate in between the flywheel & block and this has worked flawlessly for a few months of hard wheeling & street racing. The slight amount of extra rotating mass has not had any ill effects on anything. I know some will argue the logic behind this, but it works perfect & has stood up to more abuse than anything you guys will ever be doing with your cars. If you want to go the more expensive & less ghetto route then you can simply buy a dual mass flywheel that Mcloed & other companies sell.

thanks for the reply. what Im trying to do is use a 03 5.3 tahoe motor that was automatic. putting it in a 1931 plymouth roadster. I want a stick shift car that is not driven on long trips because there is no top on car. so a six speed is over kill but not out of the question. have a 91 camaro 5 speed in garage but seeing on the boards here that is to weak for me. though about going 4 speed
but I,m open to any ideas.
Just trying to get all ducks in a row before starting buying anymore stuff. have a 2010 camaro ss clutch flywheel assembly.
what is the best route to go with? found a doug nash 5 speed but heard that is more for racing so I think its out to. would like to know the best way to go with this car. thanks ahead of time

How will the car be used? What is the estimated finished weight? Will you ever drag race it with slicks or drag radials? I see no reason not to use the T5 if this is just a cruiser.

You may want to consider using a hydraulic throw out bearing. The last measurement to confirm is the bearing retainer snout diameter. Should be 1.376". If that's the case, then you can do a setup similar to my GTO. The details are in my build thread. Good luck on the build.
