you can still run the TH350 with an E38, you will just need a signal generator for the VSS Signal (autometer sells them). ECM tune will be for a manual transmission.

Regarding the Manual Valve Body, I have never run the kick down cable on a TH350, just downshift it. Kickdown cables are only required on TH400s.

I never even crossed a thread in the last 2+ years that talked about having to have a VSS signal for the ECM to function, thought never even crossed my mind

My experience with LT1s (may be different with the LS1) has been that you should always have a VSS signal. This will allow the PCM to know if the vehicle is moving. We used to have issues with engine stalls on LT1s when the vehicle was slowing down to a stop (periodically). It wouldnt happen in every case but better safe than sorry.
