i wasnt sure if you could use the map graph and rpm, so i zero'ed out the rpm one and used the map graph-i started out finding my idle psia, which was around 6-7(around 13" of vacume)-i use a 2 bar map sensor because of boost, so a 0-30 graph
i start out around 30 degs for start, at idle it goes to around 34, as psia goes down(hi vacume), i ramp up a little more, then under power i keep dropping, down to around 20-22 degs under boost-i drove around with the 3 big dials on the laptop, gave me a better idea what was happening, where i could set the timing-still playing around with the newer stroker motor, not sure where i'll end up

What are you running? Blow through turbo or super charger? What kind of carb and motor? Sounds like tuning is very important for you.

i have a D1SC Procharger, the vette setup, because i used a comp vette front acc drive, was a good fit for my chevelle-now the motor is a 403 6.0 stroker, edel. intake and a blowthru modded carb
when i built the first motor, i was new to the LS world, tried running timing like i did on the gen 1 s/b's, man, i had the headers glowing red, lol
found out i was running about 10 degs more than an LS engine on boost needed, so on the dyno i just keep ck'ing the timing mark on the sparkplug untill i was right about to the curve on the plug, which on that engine was 22 degs-now gotta start over on the new one, but with the tracks closed prob go back to the dyno
n/a engine is a little more forgiving

Is the graph shown above for a boosted motor? I am new to the LSX scene but was under the idea that the vac advance increased timing as the vac increases.?.?.

Unfortunately, MSD decided to implement their MAP graph in PSIA instead of vacuum. Makes it decidedly more difficult to translate. Took me awhile to find it, but check post #7 here, it has a link to the conversion table you need.

Ha,ha, I can certainly relate to that. I have driven several miles with that very same chart that Russ refers to taped to my dash. I think every one who has an MSD 6010 and has tried to tune the Map curve has tape marks on their dash, LOL. You would think that MSD could set them up to read EITHER psia OR inhg.

My impala will be a drag only car. No street use. Is it better to use the map or use no map sensor?

Since an engine at full throttle has virtually no vacuum or a very small amount if, for instance, the carb is way to small, you could run without it. Back in the old days of distributors, some racers still ran vacuum advance for the simple reason that at the higher vacuum levels associated with driving around the pits, the extra advance at the leaner carb settings helped keep the plugs cleaner. Just an old guys .02 cents worth, LOL. Ron
