Default junkyard engine problem

My ls1 has been passed around a little bit but originally came from a junkyard. I do not have a warranty.

The problem is the exhaust ports on the engine were never covered. The intake was removed and the intake ports were taped shut when i got it. Would it be stupid to install and fire the engine with out removing the heads? What would be the penalty for having some debris in the combustion chamber? I would appreciate everyone's opinion on this. Thanks

nothing to worry about really, the valves should be sealed to the heads. if anything bugs or moisture in the ports.
for peace of mind disassemble the heads and check the ports and check cylinders for debris.

if it were me, i would blow out the ports where valves were closed with compressed air, and if the valve was open there isnt anything to do (except take head off, blah)... i wouldnt worry.

That is exactly what i plan on doing. I really do not wont to pull the heads and pay for new gaskets and bolts.

It wouldn't hurt to pull the plugs and crank the engine by a hand a few revolutions. Just in case any water got in a cylinder.

Don't forget, half of the exhaust valves are probably open so mositure, dirt and critters are probably in there now. The valve stems are rusty so they will be tearing into the guides etc.

Thats what I am worried about. I also turned the engine over by hand which could have allowed stuff to get into other cylinders.

stick a shop vac(uum) over the exhaust port once the valve opens up.
