th400 or 4l60e
My 5.3 build for my 84 camaro is going to be a custom thumper style cam, th400 and 3500 stall as mpg means crap to me since i get less the 10 mpg with a 5 speed on my 350 (i drive somewhat spirited
). I was told for my 3300lb with driver car, 3.42 gears would make a nice setup. What gears are you running out back? a 3k stall should be enough for 500 hp correct?
I also read on one of the sponsor's sites that a stall isn't nearly as important as gears as an early mod and if you are running less than a (I believe) 3.40 - 3.50 (ish) gear a stall won't really help like it would if you had more gear. I found this interesting news since they are in the transmission building business and don't sell axles or gears.
My 5.3 tbird with a 4L60E only gets 16MPG but...
1. I can't keep my foot out of it. Call it spirited if you like.

2. the car weighs 3900+ lbs without me.
3. it has never been optimized for the slightly larger (ebay) injectors and car intake I have.
4. it has a very restrictive factory V6 exhaust.
5. The intake is pulling hot air from under hood (for now).
6. I'm not crazy about the shift points... but again it hasn't been tuned.
