th400 or 4l60e That is the question, In my 74 vette i have put in a rebuild th400 with 3200 stall, i was planing on rebuilding the motor till i saw these ls1 swaps. Now i just picked up a 5.3 lq4 with 20k on it and was wondering which trans is a better choices. The engine came with a 4l60e that dude said he bout from another guy and put on there. He donest know if it is rebuilt or has any issues. what do u guys think. I want this car to be able to handle the freeways. at the same time i hear how the 4l60's keep crapping out. My hp goal is 505 boosted.
Depends on your goals for the car, If youre not modding the hell out of that 5.3, then the 4l60e will net you some mpg and the ability to tune the shift to how you like it while the th400 will be damn near bullet proof behind that motor if you wish.

What kinda mpg am I looking at with the th400 with that motor? Cause at the moment I'm getting 10mpg with my 350. What would be a good set up for the 4l60e?
My 5.3 build for my 84 camaro is going to be a custom thumper style cam, th400 and 3500 stall as mpg means crap to me since i get less the 10 mpg with a 5 speed on my 350 (i drive somewhat spirited
). I was told for my 3300lb with driver car, 3.42 gears would make a nice setup. What gears are you running out back? Thread Starter

you can probably expect 14-15, maybe better. I personally would have the 4l60 rebuilt if i were to use it then put a smallish stall in it, 3k would be nice if not a 3600. But im rather partial to high stalls and huge cams.

If you're looking for street / strip performance and fun a stall is OK but if you want highway traveling you may want to rethink the 3000 RPM stall. You also don't want to randomly put in a stall without knowing where your cam is going to make power. You want the stall and cam's peak to be in the same area. Dig around the transmission forum for more info on that.
I also read on one of the sponsor's sites that a stall isn't nearly as important as gears as an early mod and if you are running less than a (I believe) 3.40 - 3.50 (ish) gear a stall won't really help like it would if you had more gear. I found this interesting news since they are in the transmission building business and don't sell axles or gears.
My 5.3 tbird with a 4L60E only gets 16MPG but...
1. I can't keep my foot out of it. Call it spirited if you like.
2. the car weighs 3900+ lbs without me.
3. it has never been optimized for the slightly larger (ebay) injectors and car intake I have.
4. it has a very restrictive factory V6 exhaust.
5. The intake is pulling hot air from under hood (for now).
6. I'm not crazy about the shift points... but again it hasn't been tuned.
