A 5.3 and 6.0 have iron blocks. They are 80lbs heavier than an LS1.
You have soooo much room in a K5... have you thought of buying a used 5.3 (there are hundreds for sale on car-part.com) and then buy a MasterPower turbo ($650) with larger injectors $300, used Z06 cam $150 and turbocharge it? The cheap way to do it which works great is to flip and reverse the stock exhaust manifolds forward and make a merge pipe to the turbo. The stock engine can handle 500rwhp+/500rwtq in stock form. That should be plenty of oomph for the sand/mud. You could do it for $5K as well if you did the work yourself. eBay intercooler is under $200 that can support big power.
