2001 porsche 996 ls1 conversion
as for the forced induction ideas , all i need now is the LS3 manifolds off a '10 camaro , a couple of turbo's , and a box of silicone tubes and i'm set
been following it for a long time.
I have a 95' 993 I'd LOVE to do this to.
Saw your post about the forced induction. Ever give any thought to a roots supercharger like a MagnaCharger. If one can fit in a vette... maybe enough clearance to the cowl on the 996. The pic below, albeit of an earlier 911, suggests that there is plenty of room up top. Seems to be lots of clearance above the stock intake. The MagnaCharger replaces the stock intake manifold obviously so there is really even more room. I would imagine a Turbo deck lid/spoiler would be a requirement for clearance.

but having the blower impeller peeking through the passenger side exhaust opening in the bumper would look funny , or even funnier would be a filter poking out from there

warpig , i thought about that too but on my setup the engine has very little clearance up top ; so little that i had to use after market rails since the stock ones hit the top of the engine compartment. if you look back in the thread you can find a pic showing how much clearance i have.
now if i really wanted to mount a maggie on there ( i would prefer a kennebell due to the location of the throttlebody) i would have to lower the engine a couple of inches by building a new suspension crossmember .
now if you look at brianjw4 porsche you can see that he can slap a blower on there

(but Im sure you'll get used to it pretty quick :-)
) to see what it does . i know there are alot of 700 hp tt porsches out there and working just fine ,,,, why can't i be one of them
and i agree , the twins lend to better center of gravity - and the cool looking twin intercoolers
I didn't see anything about it (may have overlooked it), but I hope so. The outside liner of regular fuel injection hose isn't meant to be exposed to gas, only the inside. Regular fuel hose will essentially "melt" when submersed in fuel.
The submersible stuff isn't cheap...I've seen some places charge $20 for a foot and a half of the stuff!
Swap looks great, glad you got it fired up!
; i finished bleeding the clutch hydraulics as well as the brakes .the front airdam came in so i slapped that on :

and then i decided to place the engine cover/ hood/ trunk or what ever you call it
on the car and adjust it's latch. i thought now would be a good time to do so since i have to see how much room i have with the rear spoiler rams ( they take up some space and stick out quite a bit in the compartment) cause i should start working on the intake tube(s), any way here is how it looks on the car :

and i took the powersteering pump off again , this time i wanted to chage the way i had the pressure hose routed , the way its set up now is it makes a loop to connect both ends and i really didn't like how it looks , so i'll be redoing it in favor of a cleaner lookign setup ( more pics soon ).
and after some thinking ( that rarely happens ) i noticed that the only thing stopping me from starting the car and driving it is just filling the cooling system , but i don't want to do it twice so i'll just wait for the coolant temp sensor to show up as well as the heater hoses so i can plumb them all in and then call the coolat system done.
so untill those parts show up , i'll be doing:
- door panel
- defrost panels
- A pillar cover
- front main seal
- new pressure hose for the power steering pump

got to spend some quality time in the garage today

first off i got the water temp adapter fitting back from the machine shop, this will enable me to fit the porsche sensor on to the LS engine's head :

also got the new shortened powersteering hose and installed that in , which fit great by the way , and i also mounted the pump and bracket to the head, but more on that later
and the new trigger wheel came in today, just need to drill it and mount it then make a brace to hold the sensor :

after that i installed the sending unit gasket and tightened the retaining ring, so now i can call the fuel system completly done

i also connected the tail lights and noticed that the work funny; as soon as you cycle the ignition the inner most light works and does not go off and they are very bright ( brake light ), if you turn the lights on the lights the center ones come on and when you turn the fog light on the outer most come on, but the brake pedal does nothing (could be that i didn't connect the switch ) .
can some one tell me the assignment of the lights in a turbo tail light?
then i decided to start filling the cooling system and power steering ( bad idea
) coolant went smoothly with no leaks , and so did the powersteering up untill i started it and then it started leaking from the connection from gm line to the porsche line, specifically the porsche connection where the hose goes into the end peice . it seems that the engine fire ruined the oring that seals everything . i managed to fix the pressure side ( well at least i think i did ) but could not do so on the return side.here is what i'm talking about :

anyhow , i started the car and it had its first little leakypoo

so i decided to drain the powersteering fluid and see if the car would move .
and now for the moment you've been all waiting for

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxuSsdyEGYs
i also noticed that i still need to bleed the brakes some more cause they're mushy and it might need a shifter cable adjustment .
so i guess i just crossed a major milestone , but still have a long way to go .
gus now i need to figure out the powersteering hose dilema, front main seal , and then wait till i get the parts i ordered .
brian, how did you connect your power steering line?
I see you mentioned that you want around 420 to the tires, what kind of cam do you have installed? Are the heads touched up at all? I read through the entire thread over 2-3 days and must have missed that if you mentioned it already.
. as for the heads they're regular ls1 ( or they might even be 5.3 heads - i'll have to check the head casting numbers) they are mostly stock , except for the home made port job on most of the ports ( i say most cause i think i did a good job on the first port and then i got tired ant the port job ended more like scratching the last port with my finger nail
)digital , i intentionally drove the car that day even though i knew it was not ready ( oil leak, sensor wiring , mushy brakes , etc) just cause i knew how much of a boost it would give me if i did ,,,, and man was i right
